Howdy! just purchased a 1989 Chevrolet k1500 Scottsdale 305 5.0L. the first thing that I noticed wrong with it was the Shift Indicator (Parking, reverse, Drive, etc, etc) is not working, did a ton of research on the issue and I took the panel underneath the steering column off and found the cable, which i presume is the culprit. tried fidgeting with it and nothing. it seems really loose, but it's not disconnected or anything. when i pull and jiggle the cable i can see the Arrow, or what have you start to slightly move. it's stuck on 3rd gear i believe, all the way to the Right. Not sure what i need to do to fix this problem, which is why I'm asking you awesome people for assistance! Thanks, Chris :)
The old style gear indicator moved on the sleeve of the gear selector that is on the column. Therer is a cable that is connected and run through two pulleys and then the indicator attaches.
Yep, thats the thing I'm talking about. everything seems to be connected, the clip is connected on the column itself, and the cable appears to be connected to the indicator. i tried pulling it but it seems to be secure. maybe I'll need to replace the whole thing? I mean, it's not really a big deal. kind of annoying but Im experienced enough to know which gear its in. just a cosemtic feature id like fixed. if i happen to sell it later on down the road.
Check the sleeve on the steering column.
alright I'll double check it again tomorrow morning when I wake up and I'll report back here. thanks again. :)
Just a follow up, ended up fixing it. I can tell you how i did it. just to lazy to type it out since its late out, and im ridiculously tired. haha :)

SOURCE: my husband broke the gear shifter off of the
get a new lever punch out the roll pin that holds it in.replace lever and reinstall roll pin
SOURCE: shift handle moves freely with out shifting trans
The shifter works off a shift cable which is connected to the transmission. The connection of this cable to the transmission is on the drivers side looking straight up were you can see it. The other end connects to the inner part of the shifting mechanisum where you shift
You can only get a replacement at any General Motos dealerships parts department
SOURCE: Just replaced shift linkage cable
Hi, Well those shift cables have a slight adjustment at the trans. When I replaced the cable on my 96 i had to adjust it slightly. But before you adjust it make sure that the cable is routed the same way that it came out, if the cable is kinked or bent in any place it can cause it to bind and not go all the way down. Hope that helps
Sounds like one of the levers inside the transmission is either broken or otherwise disengaged. Remove the shifter to see if you can see any obvious reason.
