Question about 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Squeal from dashboard when lights are on

When the temp outside is cold my Jetta "squeals" from around the light/dimmer switch area when I turn on the lights only. When it makes the sound the lights on the floor shifter blink with the "squeal". If I dim the lights the sound changes. When its warm out it is quiet! Its enough for people to hear if the windows are open. No-one can figure this out for me. I don't know if this is connected but the drivers side blinker is blinking fast now but it is not the bulb. Thank you for any help

Unplug headlight switch at back and look at plug and switch to check for burn marks caused by short .I think its just a bad headlight switch.

Check the condition and tension of the drive belt on the alternator as what you have described means that the extra load on the alternator is making the belt slip (squeal)

Check the ETC control it looks like a water temp sw and is around the upper radiator inlet to the thermostat. It lets the computer know what the outside temp is and either leans the fuel out or enriches it. As to the squeal you may have a bad idler or fan belt, Check that area for your squeal and be sure the fan belt is tight.

Check your dimmer switch. If you brush agaist it, it can turn the dash lights down so that you can't see them.

I get a loud squeal from the fan area only when

It could be a pulley. Best way to tell is to remove the belt and turn each pulley one at a time and see if you can either feel one not turning freely or try and duplicate the squeal. Keep in mind there is no load on the pulley without the belt on it so it might not be as pronouce as it would be with the belt on.

Your squeal sounds like you have a pulley frozen, or sticking, that the belt can't turn, and it will burn. You need to determine which pulley or idler pulley it is.
The cooling problem may be related (water pump) , or just a failing fan switch, or fan. See if you have two, as some vehicles have one, and a second for air conditioning.

I can`t find the fuse for the dashboard lights on my 2000 jetta.

First, make sure it's not that your dimmer switch has been turned all the way down.
Check fuse 22 and 23. If they're good then you may have a bad ground somewhere. Check the board and fuse box under the battery (yes, I know - but thats where vw located it) for corrosion.

Dim Dashboard read

On most vehicles you have a dimmer switch ( not talking about headlights) which you can adjust how bright or how dim the dashboard lights are because some people want them bright and others prefer dim either check your owners manual or check all around for it from drivers seat ( within drivers reach) when you find it if you can't adjust it then you want to consider replacing dash lights or switch.
