Question about 1997 Mercury Cougar XR7
I cant find a dipastik under the hood to chewck the fluid level for the transmission, where do I check the fluid level?
Should be on the passenger side of the car, near the firewall (wall between the engine compartment and the interior). will be connected to a long tube going into the side of the transmission. Most likely has a yellow cap on it.

Your Ford has no drain plug, to change/drain the trans fluid u must remove the transmission pan, u may be able to lower fluid level with a fluiod siphon pump (rated for oil) through the dipstick tube, harbor freight tools sells a pump for this purpose.

The brake master cylinder reservoir has a separate chamber and is used to supply the hydraulic clutch system. So make sure master cylinder reservoir is full.
Here is a pic of the system.
1. Brake master cylinder reservoir
2.Clutch master cylinder
3.Clutch slave cylinder with integrated release bearing

I had the same problem and the flasher is not located in the fuse box because it is not a normal flasher. the cougar has an electronic flasher unit that is located on the left side of the center console. the best and cheapest place to order a new one is amazon.com. they run about $30-$40
