SOURCE: trunk release
sit on trunk and try to open it, latch might be sprung if not mistakin these have a pull down after tthe trunk is closed slaming trunk closed is bad for this type of latch

this sounds like a broken wire inside the corrugated tubing for the boot/trunk loom located by the right hand hinge on the lid

SOURCE: trunk / rear lid won't open
You can try this I think the latch is just slightly missaligned.Did you put something in the trunk and push down on the trunk?Try to push down hard on the trunk where the latch is a few times while pressing the remote. If this works and it opens look for marks on the latch indicating rubing, file down, spray with WD 40.Good Luck.

try spraying some lithium grease into the latch assembly... Since your latch is releasing the primary catch point and not the secondary, it means the latch itself still works... After using the grease and letting it soak for a few mins, close the trunk and pop it several times and hope it fully releases. If not, you could try putting pressure on the trunk by pulling it open as the key is turned. Don't use WD-40
