Sounds like you maybe overpressure in tank or overheating.could be faulty pressure cap

Not to worry. Drain the oil out of the surge tank. If there is a hose attached to the bottom of the tank just let it drain inot a jug from there. Otherwise you'll have to take the tank off and drain it that way unless you have a shop vaccuum. Oil floats on water, suction it out with the shop vac. When you drain it let it drain for 1/2 hour or so and then hook it back up and fill with coolant. Oil in the coolant is not nearly as big a problem as the other way around. Hope this helps.

As long as it did not go into the actual cooling system, siphon out the contents of the reservoir and add a good dis-washing detergent (dawn is best). Use hot water. siphon out the contents again and repeat till it's reasonably clean.A tiny bit of oil in the cooling system won't hurt (a visible haze) but too much can cause the hoses to deteriorate from the inside.

hi,

please allow the car to cool down for about 2hours then check the following

the level of water in the radiator and expansion tank.. if low then top up to the appriopriaate levels and check for any leakages

check the engine oil to see if its normal and not mixed with water which could be an indication that the top gasket is burnt

switch on the car and check if all fans are working if not check fuses or call an expert.

if after esuring the normalcy of the above and the car still over heats the you should call in you automeachanic

Refilling Procedure




Notice: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL?"¢ coolant. If coolant other than DEX-COOL?"¢ is added to the system, the engine coolant will require change sooner: at 50 000 km (30,000 miles) or 24 months.






  1. Close the radiator drain cock.


  2. If previously removed, install the engine block drain plugs.


  3. When installing the drain plugs, use pipe sealer GM P/N 12346004.




    Important: On vehicles equipped with the 3.4L engine, open the coolant air bleed valve. The coolant air bleed valve is located on the top of the thermostat bypass pipe/heater pipe assembly. Close the valve once a continuous stream of coolant is expelled from the valve.



  4. Fill the surge tank to the base of the filler neck.


  5. Start the engine with the pressure cap off. Run the engine until the upper radiator hose starts to get hot.


  6. If the coolant level in the surge tank is low, add the proper mix of coolant until the level reaches the full cold line.



  7. Important: After servicing the cooling system, and if the vehicle is equipped with an intermittent low coolant light, an occasional low coolant light may be encountered during some extreme driving maneuvers. This complaint should be eliminated by removing the surge tank cap and adding coolant to a level just at or above the full cold line when the system is cold.



  8. Install the cap onto the tank with hand tight pressure.



Recycling Procedure




Important: Dispose of used coolant in a proper fashion, such as in a used coolant holding tank. Never pour used coolant down the drain. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is a very toxic chemical. Disposing of ethylene glycol antifreeze into the sewer system is both illegal and ecologically unsound.



There is currently no approved method for recycling used DEX-COOL?"¢ coolant into new DEX-COOL?"¢ coolant. DEX-COOL?"¢ coolant can be recycled into new conventional coolant. Consult local listings for coolant recycling facilities in your area.

could be a air pockets in the coolant system that have top bled out
it is a simple exercise to have a compression test done to check for head gasket or cracked head

You can Google any code & read up

An exhaust converter should last 12 to 14 years

So you got & I suspect have had problems for years
to ruin it,such as cylinder misfires,vacuum leaks or rich
fuel mix issues

Can't just drive them

Have to work on them several times a years &
look for problems

I'm not talking preventive maintenance,the part
no one wants to pay for,diagnostic time

Where do you add the coolant in a chevy Malibu maxi 2004?


You add at the coolant surge tank. The surge tank is located at the rear of the engine compartment, the tank has a radiator style cap on it. Never open hot!

I cannot find where to plug in my 2002 Oldsmobile Alero GX Coupe. 2.2L L4 ECOTEC Engine. the manual is not helpful. I even wonder if it has been removed. the manual says "Open the hood and unwrap the...


ok... the engine compartment is the entire opening under the hood...the coolant surge tank is located at the front, it is usually white plastic with a plastic cap with a warning not to open when hot. hope this helps.

Where can I get solid/detailed instructions for changing out the water pump on my 2001 Yukon SLE 4.8? Something that would include torque specs. and any must does and don'ts would be nice.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    Air outlet duct Coolant Inlet radiator hose from the water pump Upper fan shroud Cooling fan and clutch assembly Drive belt Radiator outlet hose from the coolant pump Surge tank hose Heater hose Water pump

To install:

NOTE DO NOT use cooling system seal tabs (or similar compounds) unless otherwise instructed. The use of cooling system seal tabs (or similar compounds) may restrict coolant flow through the passages of the cooling system or the engine components. Restricted coolant flow may cause engine overheating and/or damage to the cooling system or the engine components/assembly.
  1. Install or connect the following:
    Water pump. Install the water pump bolts. Tighten the water pump bolts first pass to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm); tighten the bolts final pass to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). Water pump drive belt pulley and bolts (if applicable). Tighten the pulley bolts first pass to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm); tighten the bolts final pass to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). How to change the thermostat


Alero, Grand Am 1999-2005 Thermostat - Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine
  1. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, remove the exhaust manifold, as outlined in this section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolts.
  4. Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.

  5. Remove the thermostat.

To install:
  1. Install the thermostat.
  2. Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.
  3. Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt. Tighten the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, install the exhaust manifold, as outlined in this section.
  5. Fill the cooling system.

3.1L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system to a level below the thermostat housing.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4. Disconnect the surge tank line from the thermostat housing.
  5. Remove thermostat housing-to-intake manifold attaching bolt and nut, then remove the housing.
  6. Remove the thermostat.

To install:
  1. Clean all gasket surfaces completely.
  2. Insert the thermostat in the intake manifold.
  3. Attach the thermostat housing to the intake manifold.
  4. Install the mounting bolt and nut. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  5. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  6. Connect the surge tank line to thermostat housing.
  7. Refill the cooling system.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable, remove the radiator cap, then start the engine. Allow the engine to run with radiator cap removed, until the upper radiator hose becomes hot (thermostat open). With the engine idling, add coolant to the radiator until the level is up to the bottom of the filler neck.
  9. Install the radiator cap, making sure the arrows line up with the overflow tube.

3.4L Engine
  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the air cleaner.
  3. Remove exhaust crossover pipe.
  4. Disconnect the surge tank line fitting from the coolant outlet.
  5. Remove the thermostat housing to intake manifold bolts.
  6. Remove the thermostat housing outlet and thermostat
  7. Clean the mating surfaces.

To install:
  1. Install the thermostat and housing outlet.
  2. Install the thermostat housing bolts. Tighten the thermostat housing bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  3. Install exhaust crossover pipe.
  4. Connect the surge tank line fitting to the coolant outlet. Tighten the fittings to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  5. Install the air cleaner.
  6. Fill the cooling system.
  7. Inspect the system for leaks.
