SOURCE: failsafe engine mode

The failsafe mode can appear following numerous faults being detected - some faults can be momentary and register but not cause a problem. These are normally reset by just turning ignition off/on. get the fault code memory read at a garage and this may give you a clue as to a possible problem developing. Failsafe mode will give you reduced engine performance but will allow you to drive for normally some distance. If a serious problem developes your car message centre will tell you to shut off the engine or it will shut it down.
good luck.

SOURCE: failsafe engine mode light comes on, codes

Just a quick mention - for about a month my XK8 low coolant light came on intermittently. This week with no notice while driving normally I got Stability Control Fail and FailSafe Engine Mode and wtih great difficulty got the car back to where I started from (less than a mile). Two days later (when got time) and after a bit of research, I tried it again - same problem and a very unhappy engine. I then disconnected the battery for 15 minutes (probably more) to clear the engine codes as well as check all the wiring and vacuum stuff I could under the hood (at a Jaguar master mechanic's recommendation). No problems found but the car would start and immediately stall with the air intake hose disconnected from the intake butterfly. After I reconnected the air intake hose, she started and purred like normal. The problem is the BATTERY... It is low - I've known it for a LONG time BUT it always started right up and never skipped a beat. I intend to replace it tonight but fully expect that's the issue. I've had the car 6 years (it's a 98) and had NO problems except a dead taillight asembly.

Hope this is of value...

SOURCE: 2000 S TYPE Jaguar

This happens when the communication between the computers of the car systems fails:the connection is lost for a moment , which sends the engine and transmission in Failsafe mode; if you turn off the contact the computers reset and when you start it again they test the status of the connection before reengaging - they detects that the connection is fine and resume normal functioning. In the case of my Citroen it was between the engine and transmission computers - a cable connector has been damaged by a rock.
The only way to locate the origin of this problem is to check and reseat every single connector on the wiring loom.

Engine Failsafe Mode is activated

It may be if you ignore the light. Check the oil level and coolant levels first if ok have the fault codes read to determine the sensor that put the light on. Repair it and go from there.. Normally the ECM goes into safe mode to protect the engine and gear box from serious damage but it depends on the driver to react promptly to stop further damage occurring.

P1586

Hello and welcome to JA!!!
Billy :

I'm Billy and i will assist you with this.
Billy :

The codes you have (the ones not interpreted) mean the following:
Billy :

p1351: glow relay circuit faulty, p1586: power supply to rail sensor, air mass meter, EGR valve: voltage too low.
Billy :

These problems are the ones causing the no start issue...........
Billy :

I will first list the fault details:
Billy :Engine management ECU BOSCH EDC16C34Fault codeP1586After sales description of the fault codeSupply of the rail pressure sensor, the flowmeter and the EGR valve copy : Supply voltage too lowRectification priority1Description of the diagnosticsThe supply common to the pressure sensor of the fuel high pressure common injection rail, to the flowmeter and to the EGR valve copy is lower than 4,7 V for 150 msConditions of activation of the diagnosticsConsult the associated contexts for the Pcode forwarding conditionsConditions of disappearance of the faultSwitching on of the ignitionDown-grade modes if fault presentDefault value for the air flow as a function of the engine speed and of the flow injectedInhibiting of the diagnostics and air flow sensor plausibilityUse of the flow calculatedCut of all the actuators : EGR butterfly ( Turbocharger air cooler ) ; EGR electrovalve ; Bypass valve ( Intake air heater ) In all operating modesSwitching on of the warning light and/or warning messageWarning lamp MILSymptoms ( Possible customer complaints )Jerking/stallingLack of powerStarting problemSuspect areasThe sensors sharing the power supply are as followsElectrical harnessEngine management ECU (internal failure, supply, ...)Billy :Fault codeP1351After sales description of the fault codePre-heating relay circuit : Coherence ; Relay supplied and glow plugs not suppliedRectification priority1Description of the diagnosticsThe information from the preheating control unit indicates that the relay is open even though the ECU commands the closing of the relay for 2 secondsConditions of activation of the diagnosticsConsult the associated contexts for the Pcode forwarding conditionsConditions of disappearance of the faultOn switching onDown-grade modes if fault present-Switching on of the warning light and/or warning message-Symptoms ( Possible customer complaints )Lack of powerNoiseJerking/stallingStarting problemSuspect areasGlow plugElectrical harnessPre-postheating relaysBilly :

And now, the most probable reason for your problem, would be faulty wiring.
Billy :

So i suggest that you check the wiring harness thoroughly, and the fuse boxes (connectors, fuses etc.....)
Billy :

As these are the most probable culprits.
Billy :

It could be a faulty ECU (engine control unit), however, i think that faulty wiring is the most likely cause.......
Billy :

Regards,
Billy :

1996 VW Jetta has an engine code of P1586 Engine

P0422 - Catalyst below threshold.

Catalytic converter is clogged or out of medium.

Replace it.

ACTUAL DIAGNOSTIC:

Fault Code Definition
Code P0422 indicates that the Bank 1 Main Catalytic Converter's emissions efficiency has fallen below the minimum allowable limit. This threshold is tracked by a Catalyst Monitoring Oxygen Sensor located on or near the outlet of the Catalytic Converter.

Symptoms

* Check Engine Light will illuminate
* In many cases, no abnormal symptoms may be noticed

Common Problems That Trigger the P0422 Code

* Defective Catalytic Converter
* Engine misfires have damaged the Catalytic Converter
* Internal engine damage resulting in high oil consumption and/or a leaking Head gasket has damaged the Catalytic Converter

Common Misdiagnoses

* Oxygen Sensors are replaced when the real problem is a damaged Catalyst
* Catalyst is replaced when the real problem is internal engine damage, which is producing elevated emissions levels
* Catalyst is replaced when a misfiring engine is the real problem
