SOURCE: gear box problem landrover series 2 discovery auto not selecting gears

at the bottom of the selector rod in the gearbox is a snall shaped cam which operates two switches one for foreward and one for reverse its possible that this has broke or its a computer malfunction also the front clutch has failed or low on oil maybe even the drive plate for the torque converter has broken in the middle but this would be noisy i would expect but not always

Looking for workshop manual that I can down load via PDF file on how to change clutch on Opel astra 160ie 1993 model cable has been set to max car battle's with 1st and second gear when cold

struggling in first gear, is this to engage with clutch or get in gear its self. also there are not meany places to get a 1993 manual but a 1995 will cover the clutch system. have you tried adjusting the clutch cable, its a pain to adjust but undo the cable till there is slack not much just enough to lift the cable with little finger then check by trying to engage a gear. do this adjustment in a wide area so you have space for vehicle to move about. but if you still having problems with first gear and others are fine to move then it will be the gear gaiter needs replacing, its in the gear stick. its made out of plastic and first gear is the most used gear so this will wear out quicker. you will need to disassemble the gear stick and take of the leather boot to get to the bolts and undo them.

What can be gear selection problem on landrover free lander diesel 2.0 ?

I am guessing here that it is a manual gear box and that the problem is the inability to get first or reverse gears with out crunching them. Your question here is too brief for anything more than a guess So I would suggest that the problem may be that there is air in the clutch system and the clutch is not disengaging properly. Try bleeding the clutch system and work up from there.

Cant get golf in 1st gear

If you'd said 1st and reverse I would have said clutch. First check your gear sgift rod for aligbnment. If it is out when you push the gear lever left to engage 1st your selector might be somewhere between 1st and 2nd. Next check all the linkage bushes for wear. Those also cause misalignment. Last thing to check is the gearbox itself for synchromesh damage.

Put in new clutch shifts fine but smell like it's burning, acts like it adjusted to much . it s a 97 bmw 540i, it has self adjustor, I thought i read somewhere that something has to reset in computer

Clutch doesn't have computer and is not monitored by any other system.
Very rare car here and I don't remember if it's hydraulic or cable clutch.
If it's hydraulic then there is no adjustment.
If it's a cable then it may have one.
In any case make sure that :
1)you are not riding the clutch , in other word you are not the cause of it.When you drive, keep your foot out of clutch pedal , exept when you shifting , even when you think you just have you foot on it without pressure you are wrong , little touch already apply pressure to the system disengaging the clutch.
2)Cable adjustment is ok if aplicable.
3)Clutch engaging at no more then 70% of pedal travel distance.
4)You replaced pressure plate when clutch has been done.
5)Flywheel was in a good shape(not grooved or burnt) at the time of clutch replacement.
There is a way to check if clutch is slipping.
When you go at 35-40MPH shift it to 3d gear , take your foot of clutch pedal completly then floor the gas pedal , if RPM rising much faster then you gaining the speed there is a possibilities that clutch is slipping.(you can also smell it if it burns)
Make sure you are not hazard for any traffic when doing this test.

99' Cavalier Z24 Manual Trans. - Hard to put into gear.

A stretched clutch cable doesn't feel any different than a new one. Check the clutch play (disengage tolerance), and adjust it if necessary. This is the most popular reason for hard to select gears. Worn out clutches will slip, and this is not your case. A worn out or defective synchronizer ring/ sleeve will ONLY affect 2 gears, and all the others will work fine, if this is your case, then the gearbox has to be taken apart, and rebuilt.

Crunchy gears

try changing the gear / transmission fluid first, this may ease up the gearing. but if it still there then you might have a problem with the clutch lining. have a mechanic to replace it.

Land rover discovery 1994 gear selection

Hi there!

I'm a Land Rover owner myself - old school Series models.

This sounds like major gearbox trouble.

As the selector shafts are different for gears #2 and #4, I may be inclined to think there is an external problem around the base of the gearlever.

Probably cheaper to have a look here first.

If you've been offroading, it's possible you've managed to get a stone in there.

With the covers off the transmission, if there is no fault externally that you can see, then the gearbox may have to be stripped to find the obstruction.

You can always join one of the Landrover forums to assist on this and other matters.

Hope this helps you. If it does, please rate as Fixya! Thanks.
