1984 olds cutlass supreme brougham. Drives good until operating temp is reached. It starts to cut out. Changed plugs,wires,cap,rotor. Checked timing. Still cuts out. No smoke from exhaust. Changed fuel filter also. Idles fine. Accelerate a little even parked and it is not smooth

I would be suspecting a faulty condenser and coil as when they reach operating temperature they start to break down electrically.. Check that the auto choke is coming off and not tending to over fuel the engine

there are 2 things that usually cause this, one is a dirty intake idle control valve and the other is hard engine mounts, I would say that both most likely apply to your car. try cleaning the intake with the following procedure from Ford.
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

i melted my module off of mine 89 gta once on my disturbertor and also had the plugs that snaps onto the coil pack cause a lot of problemns because it wasn't snapped all the way don on the coil pack not the plug wires but the wiring harness plugs and it gave mne a lot of problems.may want to check yourself took it to a dealer ship 4 weeks in a row and every time they said it was fixed i drove it for a couple hours and it would quit and not start and that was all it was but it started with a tune up wires, cap ,rotor button.

Perform a valve clearance inspection and adjust if necessary. Tight or sticking valves will cause a misfire or rough running concern. Note: Perform valve adjustment when the engine is stone cold. 4cyl: INT 0.26mm EXH: 0.30mm (V6 engine are hydraulic and no adjust necessary.) Also check for a sticking or stuck open EGR valve. For diagnostic purposes only: Remove the EGR valve. Place a business card over the EGR passage and bolt the EGR valve back on. This plugs the EGR ports and if the misfire goes away the EGR valve is partially stuck open and is defective.
Check for low fuel pressure. Check for low compression. Check cam timing. Check for a weak ignition coil. Also don't over look the possibility of worn or broken engine mounts which cause excessive engine movement and engine vibration. -hope this helps

My 1985 Olds cutlass won't start and the engine keeps flooding. I get a strong oudour of gas as well.


Every time you try to start it, it dumps fuel. Pull a plug wire and check for spark. If you have spark. replace the plugs, they are fouled out. If no spark, look at the crank sensor, ignition module, coil, cap and rotor. You will still need to replace the plugs..

Take the radiator cap off & start the engine. Let it idle until the engine reaches operating temperature while watching the coolant level & keeping it topped-up. Replace cap.

you just need to remove the panel under the drivers side of the dash, a few screws, then reach up behind the dash and uncilp the cable.

If its back firing you may have put the plugs back on in the wrong order, the firing order should be printed on your manifold xheck them and see if it does the trick.

Radiator fans won't come on


Hey I had the same problem with my 95 olds cutlass supreme. First i checked that the fans were receiving power by testing the voltage. Then I noticed that they were recieving voltage just not coming on. When the engine temp got pretty high, they finally came on, another words the gauge could be broken or the engine just does not tell the fans to come on until it has reached a high temp. So i started the vechicle, left it in park and gave it gas until the temp guage read very high, it reached like 230 to 250 then the fans came on. Try getting the temp up there and then see if the fans come on an dlet me know at keaka18@aol.com

sounds like a possible water temp issue... check your thermostat and/or water temp sensor. when you first start your engine the computer uses the water temp reading to do a 'cold start' scenario, more fuel. once you reach normal operating temp the fuel should be cut back. if the thermostat is not opening and closing properly this can cause strange readings from the water temp sensor (which is mounted near the thermostat)... unlikely the sensor is bad, but a possibility... more likely the thermostat.

Carb loading up and engine surges at idle


I called an old mechanic friend who confirmed what I suspected. The engine control module which controls timing was the culprit. I replaced the defective unit, and the car runs like new.
