Which way to turn spark plugs on passenger side to loosen

spark plugs only come with a right hand thread so counter clock wise to undo is the rule regardless of the side that they are on.

Firing order mitsubishi 3.5

Mitsubishi Montero 3.5 V-6n24 valve

Looking from the front of engine to the rear on the passenger side 1-3-5
Looking from the front of the engine to the rear on the drivers side 2-4-6

The engine has coil over plug with coils only on the drivers side. The spark is shared via spark plug cables to the plugs on the passenger side. So If you are replacing the spark plug cables:

#2 cyl.coil drivers side shares spark with #5 passenger side-
#4 coil drivers side shares spark with #1 passenger side-
#6 coil drivers side shares spark with #3 cylinder passenger side.

Removing no 1 spark plug

Start by taking the intake apart. Loosen (8MM) the clamp to the MAF sensor and the clamp to the throttle body (8MM). Take the air line off the front of the resonator (one that goes to the pressure regulator). Two 10mm bolts hold the resonator on (passenger side- next to the air intake ducting), take them off. Disconnect the MAF sensor connector.

Remove air ducting with resonator. [There will be another line connected to the resonator in back, it goes to the valve cover vent. Make sure not to lose it!! It is 1/2 rubber line.]

10mm socket will loosen the ignition coil that sits on top the spark plugs. You may want to unplug the coils. Once that is unscrewed, you can pull that straight up and off out of the cylinder

Get your 5/8 spark plug socket, connect the 5" extension and 3" extension to it and send it down to get a hold of the plug. [I recommended a breaker bar because some are on there REALLY tight!!] Attach your socket and loosen the spark plug and pull it out.

How do i get to the spark plugs and spark plug coils to replace them? it looks inaccessible from both the radiator and passenger compartment sections.

the passenger side is easy and be patient
the driver side more patients take the black pipe air filter intake
remove the power steering braket 3 bolts 8mm if you have the egr valve remove it too just make sure that you have room on the driver side loosen the fuel rail but dont have to remove completely just move out of the way
after all this you will have plenty of space just remember to lube the injector seal and clean around before you out injector rail back some wd40 would do the trick replace the coil boots those need to be replaced anyways good luck

I replaced my spark plug wires on my 1996 chevy truck. may have crossed one, need a diagram from the spark plugs to the distributer cap.

Since you didn't state whether it is a V6 or V8, I'll give you both.

V6 -4.3Liter
Firing Order is 1-6-5-4-3-2
Distributor rotor turns Clockwise
Number 1 spark plug tower on distributor cap, faces the front of the engine.

->Drivers side, spark plug order in engine, starting from the Front going back:
1-3-5
->Passenger side, spark plug order in engine,
starting from the Front going back:
2-4-6

If it's Electronic, the distributor cap has a Left side, (Drivers side), and a Right side, (Passenger side)
Starting from the Front, going back on the Left side,
3-1-5
Starting from the Front going back on the Right side,
2-4-6

V8-5.0, 5.7, and 7.4Liter
Firing Order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
Distributor rotor turns Clockwise
Number 1 spark plug tower on distributor cap,
faces Front, towards the Drivers side.

Electronic distributor cap has two sides. Drivers, (Left), side and Passenger, (Right), side.
Starting from Front going back on Drivers side,
1-7-3-5
Starting from Front going back on Passenger side,
8-2-4-6

Spark plug order in engine, starting from Front going back, Drivers side:
1-3-5-7
Spark plug order in engine, starting from Front going back, Passenger side:
2-4-6-8

Spark plugs

Your going to need a spark plug socket with a swivel, extension, and a spark plug wire pliers. You can access the spark plugs through the wheel well. you can from the top but that takes too long and you can't get to all of them from there. You can raise the front end just enough to give you some room in the wheel well with out removing the front wheels. To get to the spark plugs, move the wheel well splash guard up and out of the way so you can access the spark plugs on the side of the engine. One the passenger side is the easy one to work out and should take you under 20 min to do all three, change them one at a time so you don't mix the spark plug wires. On the drivers side is work on the #1plug (towards the front) and #5 (towards the fire wall) first and do #3 plug last. Spark plug #3 is behind the shock tower mount, you need to loosen it first with the socket, then remove the socket and remove and install the plugs by had. It should take you almost 10 min just to do that plug and a cramped hand.  When replacing the spark plugs, use anti seize so it's easier to remove the plugs next time and use platinum plugs so your good to go for 100,000 miles unless you have a plug failure due to running too lean or rich. Bring the truck down and place the ignition to the run position for 30 seconds and turn off for 10 seconds and then start and let idle for 1 min then go for a test drive to reset all the engine management sensors.  Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted, be glad to help.

Timin

a1989vert: With the engine off, remove the SPOUT connector jumper. It lies just under the distributor and is rectangle shaped.
Connect timing light to #1 spark plug wire (Front passenger side)
Timing should be at 10BTDC. If not correct then loosen distributor bolt and adjust. When done, trun engin off, tighten dist. bolt and plug SPOUT jumper back in.
