Question about Cars & Trucks

My 1988 chrysler new yorker is giving me a reading saying improper voltage what could be causing this? Ive tryd 2 different good batterys in it and i get a few miles down the road the battery light starts blinking and the voltage drops to the bottom of the guage and gives me a readout of improper voltage and i dont believe its a bad alternator because the first time i drove it it did this and drove it for about 50 miles after the battery guage compleatly droped i was afraid to stop and shut it off thinking the battery was shot but after i got home i shut it off and it started right up with no troubles??

The warning light comes on if the alternator is not charging the battery. You can run for several miles on just battery voltage.
The alternator output would need to be checked when the warning light is on. Its very seldom a battery problem.

SOURCE: 2006 Chevy Silverado alternator intermittent charging

Perfectly normal.
Starting with the 2005 model year, light duty full size pickups and utilities are equipped with a new Regulated Voltage Control (RVC) system. This system reduces the targeted output of the generator to 12.6-13.1 volts when in "Fuel Economy Mode" to improve fuel economy. The generator may exit "Fuel Economy Mode" if additional voltage is required. This will cause the voltmeter to fluctuate between 12 and 14 volts as opposed to non-regulated systems that usually maintain a more consistent reading of 14 volts. This fluctuation with the RVC system is normal system operation and NO repairs should be attempted.

Dear Sir,
Yes you are right it can wire problem for alternator, you can check , tow things to be check at alternator end , one is if battery light is showing on cluster that mean the small wire at alternator is ok, if not then light will not come on at cluster meter. and second wire is run from battery +ve terminal to alternator you can check voltage at alternator end if supply is there it means wire are ok if not may cause fo bad connection at battery end , it can also lead to no charging for battery. if both wire are ok you can go for alternator ,
Thanks

SOURCE: Just filled the gas tank

A loose connection on the sending unit could cause the problem but also moisture in the tank in cold weather could also be a factor in which i would add fuel line antifreeze to a full tank of fuel..........Hope this helps you out.

Agreed, you can do one of two things. Replace the alternator, or get some new brushes and try out your soldering skills. Good luck.

find out what motor you have it should be on a sticker under the hood that says THIS VEHICLE CONFORMS TO ..EPA...and in this info it will give the year.. take this info to your local auto parts store and ask them for the t stat and what else you may need to complete the job . I think you will find it fairly easy to do, depending on the motor ..

make sure you remove the battery hold down bracket ,its located on the frt or rear of battery with 1 bolt holding it, then battery should come right out also the connections on top, good luck.

1988 New Yorker, the radiator fans inoperative, fan's tested ok, relay?

the relay would be a good start. it should be located in the fuse box in the engine compartment near the battery. you may also look for a brass fitting/sensor that screws into the side of your radiator. basically it is used to turn on the fan when the coolant reaches a preset temperature.
