The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is a variable resistor, that measures the temperature of the engine coolant. The ECT sensor has a signal circuit and a low reference circuit. The engine control module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the ECT signal circuit and a ground for the ECT low reference circuit. When the ECT is cold, the sensor resistance is high. When the ECT increases, the sensor resistance decreases. With high sensor resistance, the ECM detects a high voltage on the ECT signal circuit. With lower sensor resistance, the ECM detects a lower voltage on the ECT signal circuit. If the ECM detects an excessively high ECT signal voltage, which is a low temperature indication, DTC P0118 sets. You have A bad coolant temp sensor or a wiring problem !

What does that mean?

The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor screwed into a coolant passage in the cylinder head. Sensor resistance is high when coolant temperature is low and resistance drops when coolant temperature increases. The powertrain control module (PCM) provides a 5 volt reference and a ground to the sensor. The PCM monitors voltage drop to determine coolant temperature. If the ECT reads less than freezing temp. when engine has been running for more than a few minutes, the PCM determines a circuit fault and sets this code. Or if the PCM determines the sensor resistance is out of specs, this code is set.
Potential Symptoms

Symptoms of a P0118 could include:

  • Very poor fuel economy
  • A no start condition
  • Vehicle may start, but run very poorly, blowing black smoke, running very rough and misfiring
  • Illumination of MIL
Causes

A code P0118 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • A bad connection at the sensor
  • An open in the ground circuit between the ECT sensor and the PCM
  • A short in the voltage feed between the sensor and the PCM
  • A bad PCM (less likely)

Coolant sensor is bad on my 01 Eclipse 2.4 L motor. I need to know where it is on my car and how to change it


Hi there,

Diagnostic codes # P0115 to P0119 all relate to the ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor circuit.

Assuming you have correctly diagnosed a faulty ECT sensor, here are the instructions to locate and test:

* Look for a bolt size sensor with a wire attached - on Mitsubishis, the ECT sensor is usually located either on the Intake Manifold, or close to the Thermostat housing (to measuer coolant temp).

This is what is looks like:

* With the sensor portion immersed in hot water, check resistance as per the table below (convert to degrees F if necessary):

The reference values given below are measured between ECM terminal 72 and ground...

When measuring input / output voltage be careful not to use ECM ground terminals. The ECM will enter fail safe mode once a malfunction is detected and the MI will light up.

Usually, P0118 is indicative of a bad temperature sensor, but doesn't rule out these other possibilities. If you're unsure of how to diagnose a PCM, do not attempt.

Hi, What does problem code B0116 mean. Its a lexus ES300 1999


ect fault engine coolant temperature sensor circuit range/performance fault. you need a new ect sensor.if you want to test is with a ohm meter here is specs starts at 30k ohms at -4 degrees it will goto 0.2k ohms at 212 degrees F so the hotter it gets the less resistances it gets. it is like 15-31 bucks at local parts store and no hard to change.

Did you check all the basics first? Your air filter or catalytic converter could be plugged, your brakes could be dragging, or incorrect ignition timing, dirty fuel injectors, insufficient tire pressure, poor wheel alignment, or you may even have a fuel leak that you are not aware of. ECT - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor (Figure 27) is a thermistor device in which resistance changes with temperature. The electrical resistance of a thermistor decreases as the temperature increases, and increases as the temperature decreases. The varying resistance affects the voltage drop across the sensor terminals and provides electrical signals to the PCM corresponding to temperature.
Thermistor-type sensors are considered passive sensors. A passive sensor is connected to a voltage divider network so that varying the resistance of the passive sensor causes a variation in total current flow.
Voltage that is dropped across a fixed resistor in a series with the sensor resistor determines the voltage signal at the PCM. This voltage signal is equal to the reference voltage minus the voltage drop across the fixed resistor.
The ECT measures the temperature of the engine coolant. The sensor is threaded into an engine coolant passage. The ECT sensor is similar in construction to the IAT sensor.

Heating System


The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is mounted in the intake manifold and sends engine temperature information to the ECM. The ECM supplies 5 volts to the coolant temperature sensor circuit. The sensor is a thermistor which changes internal resistance as temperature changes. When the sensor is cold (internal resistance high), the ECM monitors a high signal voltage which it interprets as a cold engine. As the sensor warms (internal resistance low), the ECM monitors a low signal voltage which it interprets as warm engine.

See Figures 3 and 4
  1. Remove the ECT sensor from the vehicle.
  2. Immerse the tip of the sensor in container of water.
  3. Connect a digital ohmmeter to the two terminals of the sensor.
  4. Using a calibrated thermometer, compare the resistance of the sensor to the temperature of the water. Refer to the engine coolant sensor temperature vs. resistance illustration.
  5. Repeat the test at two other temperature points, heating or cooling the water as necessary.
  6. If the sensor does not meet specification, it must be replaced.
