Check the firing order as you may have 2 wires crossed . Check for vacuum leaks . Have a compression test done to check for valve damage . Check the tappet clearance as an inlet valve may be held open

Could a fuel filter in vw 1600 beetle cause backfire

very unlikely
back firing is from partially open inlet valves , incorrect firing order , shorting across the points , faulty condenser , loose coil wires or faulty pigtail wire from the points plate to the ground ( distributor body)
seeing as to you have put in new points , I suspect that the condenser lead is shorting across to the points plate where it attaches to the moving point spring
also if the firing order is wrong after replacing the distributor cap that will also cause the problem

I have a vw beetle 1600 which backfired .I replaced all plugs and she started now refuses to start .

i have owned three.. worked on heaps

probably your plug leads in wrong order

1972 VW 1600 cc is: 1 - 4 - 3 - 2

the plug leads can break or pull off at plug ends or breakdown internally during a plug change

if not ,,a coil ,,,or points gap ,or dissy cap .dissy .carbon tip or leads arcing

very rarely any fuel problems
a good jetted webber carby fixes that

if no better ......motor may have burnt a valve

Why does my vintage beetle backfire on hi revs

Hello Kyle. On High Revs when having backfire you might have more rich mixture ( more fuel into air ) going through the carb ventury. check the spark plugs and their gap. Also if you do have contact points check for the correct gap. Also by using a timing light check you the timing if is in advance timing.

Have 1965 vw beetle and put new engine in it and change everything and can not get it to run

New distributor? new points and condensor? Wires correct? Valve clearance set when cold? The valves need adjustment when new and every 500 miles per manufacturers specifications. New coil? All these are factors.

1984 corvette, tuned up 12 months ago. Driving the other day started acting like it was not getting gas, finally would not run. Just crank up & cut off. Checked the fuel filter by undoing one end...

Sounds like a condensor or breaker point problem. When it just starts backfiring while running it is certainly ignition related. Most of the time condensors are the culprit but it can be an ignition module or distributor breaker points / sensor (if so installed.) Should not be to hard to sort out. I know most Vette owners are long ago or soon to be mechanics :)

After changing the distributor on my 1987 vw polo, 1.3, it's running very lumpy!! What is causing this??

You may be off the timing mark by one gear tooth. Make sure eng is at top dead center and that rotor is pointing at number one cylinder. If not reinstall in correct position

1992 Firebird not starting

If it is backfiring the firing order is not correct. turn the crank until the timing mark lines up to zero on the timing cover. Remove the distributor cap, and see where the rotor button is pointed. It should be pointed at number 1. (at this point you have a 50/50 chance) The cam turns half the speed of the crank shaft, this means that even through cylinder number one is at top dead center, it might be on the exhaust stroke instead of compression stroke. If this is the case, you will need to turn the crank shaft one full revolution, and try again.

Reinstall the distributor cap with plug wire number one being placed where the rotor button is pointed. Install the rest of the plug wires in order.
