qoute FSM and alldata.com (log in and see for self)
the signal from the vehicle speed sensor is used by the ECU as well as the cruise control and automatic transaxle control units. Accords and Preludes use an external sensor mounted on top of the power steering speed sensor in the engine compartment. The power steering speed sensor is gear-driven and controls the steering boost in relation to the speed of the vehicle. An electric pulser unit is mounted on top of this unit and is coupled to it by a small shaft. The motion from the lower unit is transferred to the upper unit; the resultant electrical signal is sent to the appropriate control units.

How hard or expensive is it to change a speed sensor in a 1991 Honda Prelude SI?

The speedometer sensor is located on the top of the transmission. It is held on by one bolt. Remove the bolt and gently pull and turn the speedometer sensor and the whole assembly will come out of your transmission.

Park your Honda Prelude on a level surface, activate the emergency brake and place blocks behind the back tires for safety. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a terminal puller.

Raise the vehicle on the side of the wheel speed sensor's location. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.

Disconnect the sensor electrical connection from the wiring harness.

Take note of the connection location for the sensor retainers, grommets and clips. You will need to know this information for the installation process.

Start at the connector end of the sensor cable and remove grommets, clips and retainers in order to free the harness.

Unscrew the sensor mounting bolt and remove the sensor from the differential housing.

Install the new speed sensor by reversing the removal process. Loosely secure the sensor and sensor harness connection in place, taking precaution to keep the harness from twisting or bending. Once in place, torque the sensor mounting bolt to 16 foot pounds (22 Nm). Tighten any bracket bolts to 84 inch pounds (10 Nm).

Lower the vehicle safely and reconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to your owner's manual to perform an ABS system check to confirm that you installed the sensor properly.

Transmission input output speed sensors

The speed sensor is on the tailshaft of the transmission,on the passenger side of the car,it has 3 wires. The output sensors are located on the front of the transmission about mid-way up the housing & only have 2 wires. Note the output sensors are not responsible for vehicle speed. Only the output shaft speed is recorded. They are for finding the correct cvi(clutch volume index) only. If you have a cvi issue, the transmission is toast.

The tachometer on my 92 Honda Prelude Si works but the factory speedometer isn't whatsoever.

Its probably your speed sensor mounted on the back side of your transmission on top of the final drive gear. Its the sensor/plug located just under the shift linkage. Make sure its bolted down tight and check for any loose connections.

Where is the speed sensor located for my 96 caprice?

Your car has the 4L60E trans, and the speed sensor is located in the tailshaft of the trans. The tailshaft is located on the rear of the trans, and is held onto the trans with 4,15mm bolts. The driveshaft slips into the tailshaft. The speed sensor will have at least 2 wires going to it.The speed sensor will be located either on the driverside or passenger side of the trans.95 was a transitional year,so the speed sensor could have been mounted on either side.Good luck
