Transmission problem solutions

Ok so I have this 2002 ford escape XLT with 4x4. Recently it had a transmission problem and by asking a mechanic who told me the transmission has gone. It runs but sometimes doesn't want to drive. Now say I decide to change the transmission on it and I find one, so which type of transmission would I need how would I know which one is the right one? I called the ford dealership, and got the code #. As I was told I need it. Can anyone please help?

I bought a perfectly good car years ago that the Mechanics said the transmission was gone, it turned out that it had no transmission fluid. I bought the car and found that the problems were gone after adding fluid. Check this first.

If in fact you do need a transmission, then you can find the specs on your car located by the windshield, on the upper part of your dash. There is a metal tag with the "Vin" information on it. Your local auto parts dealer can give you the Transmission size using this code.

Testimonial: "Ok and I'll check the transmission fluid and after this if fluid is where it needs to be and there's still a problem then this means that the transmission is gone right?"

Not necessarily. You may need to have the bands tightened. They can be tightened by hand, but it takes two people. Have that checked first. It sounds like it is not going into gear. Another thing.... does it make a clinking noise? If it does then it may be a chipped flywheel. Can you give me more info, or are these sollutions working?

SOURCE: 2002 Ford Escape XLT OD light blinking - am told

The Trans fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles or two years.
Changing any fluid on a vehicle is never a fix for anything, just preventative maintenance.
You should have done the Power Steering Fluid, Trans Fluid,Brake Fluid,Etc a couple of times, before getting to 80K.

Also I would hope you changed the spark plugs buy at least 60K.

You may have a TCC Solenoid going bad,but the engages the torque converter clutch.

Is it shifting into OD? Most likely you have a solenoid issue, but need to find out which one. Most fords have a solenoid pack in the trans, with all of them in one unit. Not sure on yours.

The only way it will be expensive, is if you go to a dealer or get pitched some story by a shop, not able to diagnose, what is most likely a simple fix.

My 2002 Escape is stuck in reverse

I am uncertain what escape you drive but if this is the 4 cylinder version, then you will require a new transmission or have your transmission serviced. You asked why? Because Ford did not put a transmission cooler on the 4 cylinder, but only on the 6 cylinder version with the tow package, which prevents your transmission from overheating. Furthermore, you have to change your transmission fluid at greater intervals to prevent harm to your transmission.

Moreover, is this a manual transmission or automatic
?. If this is a automatic, you maybe able to manipulate the shift linkage cable on the transmission and get it out of reverse.

The PCM is the computer that keeps the engine and transmission functioning properly. It is really called a Powertrain Control Module. Having the computer replaced is nothing to worry about. If the engine is running strong and the transmission shifts ok, then the PCM is probably ok and nothing to worry about. If the PCM is having problems still, then the check engine light will be on. Your mechanic will be able to hook up the diagnostic tool to it and look at the vehicles past. If there are a bunch of codes in the history, there still could be problems.
