Depending on the amount of miles, maintenance records, or how hard the car has been driven either by a previous owner, or by yourself. The engine's main crankshaft bearings or the connecting-rod bearings could be excessively worn.

Also, it could very well be a wiring problem to the sensor and/or computer causing the problem.

Don't delay on this. Take the vehicle in and have the oil pressure sensor checked. It could be just the sensor or it could be something more serious. A drop in oil pressure could lead to catastrophic engine failure.

SOURCE: 1999 saab wont stay running while idling

I had a similar problem with my Saab, stalled at red lights when idling,

As suggested by Greg I suspected the IAC and was just about going to the repair shop and have the ECU codes pulled.

Anyway, I decided it could be a good idea to check the engine air filter first. It turned out to be rather dirty so I changed it, This solved the problem in my case, the car has worked perfectly ever since.

Sometimes it can be very simple!

First thing to do is to make sure you are using the correct weight oil for your vehicle which is 5w30. Make sure you are using a quality filter such as Mopar, Purolator, or Wix. If that is the case then replace the oil pressure sensor. If the problem is still there have an oil pressure test run on the system. If the oil pressure is low at idle then you will need to remove the oil pan and find out why. Could be the oil pump screen is clogged or the oil pump needs replacing. You need to stop driving this vehicle until this problem is solved or serious engine damage could occur.

chekc the oil level. if it is ok then put an oil pressure gauge on it and get an accurate pressure reading. if it is at an acceptable pressure change the sensor

could be a few things ,but i would replace the oilsending unit first its cheap and farly easy to change, make shure you dont have a low idle that would make it com on too

If you have oil in your engine this usually means you are lacking oil pressure. Saabs were prone to producing sludge at the mesh filter which blocks the oil getting to the sump and circulating properly.

Engine knocking noise in 2000 saab 9-3 SE?


It's a common problem with these cars i am actually fixing mine as of now. That car is all about oil pressure and when it is low you'll start to get a tap and or what sounds like a knock due to the lifters not having enough pressure. Try taking your oil pan off and check your oil pick up line going from the oil pan to the turbo. A lot of times it gets a lot of sludge build up and makes the pressure little to none. If that looks clear check the slump inside the oil pan and see if that has sludge build up. Well hope this helped

first off your mechanic sounds like he's taking you for a ride! If the oil lights coming on you need to check your oil pressure. I wouldnt drive this car anymore till I knew for sure I was getting good oil pressure through out the motor. Find a different mechanic! Mechanics are some of the biggest lying thieves! Right up there with lawyers.

take this serious until you know what it is for sure. first thing is you have the oil press checked with a manual gauge and verify if it is low or not. if it is low and there is no motor noise then you can see about replacing the oil pump. it can also be a dirty slugged engine stopping oil flow. and taking the valve cover and pan off you can see what the conditon of the motor is. or it can be a faulty gauge. I the oil level has already been checked. and the light probaly comes on at idle? a bad oil pump or clogged motor can ruin the engine if nothing is done. have the oil press checked with a manual gauge.

Engine Malfunction Light


Hi I have a 2001 9-3 SE 2.0T and the same problem.

My garage have checked the car three times now and each time the OBD 2 has reported that the Cat is reporting a substandard output. They have tested the cat each time and it's well within it's limits.

In the end I got sick of paying £49 to clear the MIL check light only to have it appear a few weeks later. So I bought from Ebay an ELM327 for about £50 and now turn off the MIL Check light myself. Also now when it come on I can check the cause and my garage can't pull the wool over my eyes on the cost of possibly non needed repairs.
