Question about 2005 Ford Focus
When accelerating near 3000 revs, in third and 4th gears the powertrain malfunction indicator light comes on. Not every time. The car seem to drive on normally but has been sluggish sometimes and can feel rough to drive. Mpg is usually around 40- 50 which is pretty much expected for what I use the car for getting to work and back 6 miles away and some longer journeys. The powertrain light resets when ignition is off and I only managed to get this code from buying a reader off Amazon and self diagnosing because the fault is never active unless the light is on

The throttle position sensor could be kaput.
On the other hand you might begin by cleaning the throttle. It may be sticking. Locate where the throttle cable goes to the intake and use an appropriate spray cleaner to clean the throttle.

clunking from the tranny has nothing to do with the tps or anything even close to it. you may end up needing a new transmission. my friend has the same car as you and apparently they are notorious for having terrible transmissions.
do a vaccuum test to diagnose the revving properly

I had a 2002 model 1.4 Fiesta, same problem Engine management light or
ECA, electronic accelaration Control (EAC), it needs a ford dealer to do
a computer diagnostic, most likely that it will need replaced.
Mt friend who is a mechanic for ford said that it was a common factory fault and is very common in 1.4 zetec /duratec petrol models.
I now have a 2007 Fusion and was quick to see if this problem had been sorted on this model, and it has!!
Hope this helps!!
