'94 Protege's auto trans: no overdrive, poor automatic upshifting
I'm from Hawai'i. My '94 Protege's automatic transmission either needs to be manually upshifted or needs to start from the 2nd gear position to get from low to 3rd, and there is no overdrive. The OD (HOLD) button on the shifter seems to work because the 'HOLD' light works and it will downshift to 2nd gear from 3rd when the button is pressed with the shifter in the '2' position. The trans is not slipping, low on fluid, or showing any other problems. I posted about this situation earlier, stating that I think it's an electronic switch or connector, but I'm unfamiliar with this car's transmission and what to look/test for. Can anybody please help me troubleshoot/fix the problem? Much mahalo!

Suggestion try to check if the release bearing of the transmission is still ok and check also the transmission oil level and if you need to change the transmission oil.

Transmission speed sensor loss of signal will not allow torque converter lock up (no overdrive). Transmission filter should be serviced at 80,000 miles. Perform an OBDII scan for stored fault history. The scan should show any issues with trans. sensors or solenoids that can be addressed during trans. service. Let the ODBII scan be your guide to any repairs to avoid buying parts you don't need.
Assuming this is equiped with the same trans that I am familiar with...
On the drivers side, just above the transmission pan, there is a two wire connection. This controls the "lock up converter." You can unplug it to disable it. You won't have overdrive, so you might want to try it out, as you can always plug it back in.
im not sure about the fan Try spraying the heck out of the entire assembly on the drivers side of the tranny with PB Blaster and as for hard shifts is it manual or auto? if auto change filter
There is only 1 transmission for a 1994 Licln Town Car. Its a AODE, Automatic Overdrive Electronic trans. Earlier trans were AOD, non electric. Before that it was a C-6. After the AODE, your transmission, was a 4R70 trans. The trans will need to be rebuilt or replaced with a salvage yard unit if its slipping, or making noises. If you have it rebuilt, make sure you get at least a 3yr/50k warranty. Most salvage yard trans will make it 12m/12k, so if the rebuilder is confident about his or there rebuild, he should give you that. Tum the overdrive switch on for good fuel
economy and smooth driving. If engine braking
is needed in the "D" range or if repeated
upshifting and downshifting between the 3rd
and 4th gear is needed when climbing a
gentle slope, it is recommended that the
overdrive switch be tumed off. Tum the
overdrive switch back on immediately afterward.
When the overdrive switch is tumed on, the
transaxle will automatically upshift to the second,
third and overdrive gears. When the overdrive
switch is tumed off, the transaxle will not
upshift to the overdrive gear. For normal driving,
the selector lever should be left in the "D"
position and the overdrive switch tumed on.
If you need to accelerate rapidly, press the
accelerator pedal all the way to the floor. The
transaxle will automatically shift to a lower gear,
depending on the vehicle speed and load.
The ETC switch is a transmission control device. When it is not active, the transmissions shifts normally. When the ETC is engaged, it alters the shift points.
Example: the 1-2 upshift occurs normally between 18-20 mph. Now, say you are towing something, or are carrying a heavy load...engage the ETC, and the trans computer will "hold" the 1-2 upshift until 22-24 mph. It is just for that, prolonging the shift points, due to load.
The switch on the side of the shifter is for the Overdrive. Engaged (the OD light is off) the transmission shifts into overdrive. This saves you gas. When the button is dis-engaged (the OD OFF light is on) , the transmission does NOT shift into overdrive. It is best to leave the overdrive ON, and the ECT OFF to obtain maximum fuel mileage. I hope this has answered your question. Please feel free to comment back if you have any other questions. Thanks for chosing FixYa for assistance.
Hi. 2005 Corolla CE. It's normal. They tend to do this when upshifting form 1st to 2nd gear. No timing chain readjustment needed.
96 Corolla. Overdrive not working properly, if not engaging after 45mph constantly. If driving on the city, is normal, but not after 45mph, when the car is trying to engage overdrive in order to save gas and preserve the trans gears. If not able to get help at the dealership, find another one and explain them the situation.
