You need to replace the timing chain guides/tensioners. 200-2003 crown vics are prone to that problem. 2004 and up are all okay (with new modified design.)

You must replace the timing chain and the tensioner assembly as well as any other parts that you find worn such as sprockets and guides. All this requires special tools and the timing cover to be removed.

noises are tough, but try getting under the car when the engine is cold and it has been sitting for a while and hit (with your fist) the catalytic converter-the substrate in cats break up and cause rattles that are especially noticable when the vehicle is running at low speeds.

1994 toyota pickup rattles at low speeds (~15-19 mph).

Check for loose heat shields the cover the exhaust. I find this is the source of many rattles. They are made of sheet metal and if they are not clip or tightened down the low vibration frequency when the car is running at slow speed will cause them the hit the exhaust pipe/ front mainfold.

Rattle in front of engine when running. Was told may be timing chain? 160,000+ miles no service history

I had a nasty 'rattle' in the front of my engine on an older truck of mine (around 190,000 miles) and it was the timing chain. The guide for the chain had broken and caused my timing chain to rub against the front cover and start eating it's way out (the rattle). Got it fixed, new chain and replaced the front cover as well and everything is fine. Good luck, I hope this helps.

What will my car sound like, if the timing chain needs to be replaced? I have a 1997 Nissan Altima.

there will be a rattle the front of the engine. the end with all your pulleys and belts on. And it will be hard to work out if it's in the engine or the pulleys.

It is a common that a TICKING coming from the front of the engine is the timing chain guide.

This -->LINK<-- will help you alot.
