1996 honda civic ex automatic starts when the engine is cold but has a really hard time starting if the engine was just running

Okay, my 1996 honda civic EX always starts up with a little rough idle for just a few seconds when it's cold. But say I drive it a bit to the store or the gas station and I shut it off. When I get back in to start my car it will just crank as if it wants to start but it doesn't seem to grab. After a few attempts to start it, it usually finally starts. I've checked the main relay, its fine. I'm just running out of options here. Right now it's cold where I live. But as I said earlier. my car has no problem cranking up when the engine has be off for a couple hours and it's cold.

Ignition coil breaking down ? also sometimes ignition wiring can break down when too close to a heat source ie giving a poor conduction of electricity when hot. check wiring etc would be my first thoughts as it was the cause of a "warm" start problem on my mates porsche on cable which were too close to the exhaust manifold making them degrade over a period of years.

(bad spark or)its flooding, use wide open throttle like the opr guide instructs to clear flooding, injectors can leak, and that cold start misfire is bad. why not give it a tuneup first. that includes wire sets, no wires sets last life of the engine, that is why tuneups were invented. if you want to test each wire, i can teach that, its like the keystone cops... 1: the spray water trick the , OHms per foot check the and the watch em in dark trick , and the tin foil trick (ill skip that you will get shocked) why not tune it up,, like we do and not have to do the kesystone thing.."comedy act"

and no scan tool is way bad, nobody fixes cars with on one, unless gue$$ing is fun, and lots of time on hands.

btw 2, some parts do fail. hot. the CMP sensors like to do that on some cars, but guess what the EDU tells you that, same with CKP sensor. lean the unflood mode, and learn how to read spark plug tips. and to use a $9 scan tool.

Is it flooding the operators manual, (all cars) tells you what to do.
it tells you to crank wide open throttle, (bar stool, pedal to dah metal)
this activates super secret unflood mode by which the ECU cuts ALL fuel injections, start now and with cute black cloud at end of tail pipe>
that it was flooding.
the tests are no diff, from 1920 to now.
compresion good.? if it runs perfect ,most times, seems it is.
good spark? you check spark ? and then pulled all spark plugs.
are he soaking with fuel,or all black tips? ever do a tuneup this decade?
bad fueling, there are many tests for bad fueling. ask.

if engine is good.
the EGR not stuck open
the spark is good an all cylinders with good sparkplugs
then its bad fueling.
is the CEL lamp glowing key on,Yes.no
if yes good, if not The ecu has lost 12vdc power.
if yes, then attach any scan tool to near knees 16pin connector
crank engine for 5 seconds, got DTC errror as you release key./
yes , bingo

when you stop a car, hot the ECT reads 180F or more.
does it> if it reads say 50F, IT FILL FLOOD.
you can see the ECT just key on, with any scan tool, no need to start.
there are more. but this is a good start.(no pun)

SOURCE: 92 honda civic ex starts but won't stay running - replaced relay

Is the check engine light on?

Make sure all the sensors are still plugged in and are nice and tight. Then Check spark. Make sure it is getting a nice strong spark. If spark is fine I would check fuel pressure. Make sure it is getting proper fuel pressure. Make sure that their is nothing blocking the intake pipe. Pull the intake tube off at the throttle body and shoot some starting fluid in their while the engine is cranking over.

Afternoon. I have a 2005 honda civic 1.7 cdti. One of the belts is making a noticeable rubbing/squeaking sound, more often when the car is started up for the first time or the engine is cold (not...

The squealing after starting is usually a loose belt on the alternator. The alternator has to do heavy charging after starting the car. If the belts really have been changed and properly tensioned then its hard to guess what might be wrong. As far as "heavy fumes" when the car is started ... burning gasoline makes water vapor and you can see it when the engine is cold. If its really dark as in black or in that range then it would seem the engine is running very rich when cold. Does the car burn a lot of oil?

it sounds like you might have a fuel problem. Start by checking the fuze for the feul pump to see if it is corroded or broken. You might also want to try changing the feul filter.

Speedometer does not indicate speed during cold weather.

You have a speed sensor on the transmission casing. Look in the front part of the engine bay down on top of the casing. It should be a little to the left between the radiator and the engine and has a wire plugged into it. It's pretty small and is very easy to replace.
