Saab engine problem

We are thinking of buying a 1976 99 GL Saab. But it overheats and there seems to be a bit of antifreeze in the oil. Can a water pump cause that problem, or is it more likely a head gasket or cracked head?

SOURCE: how do I replace my 2004 Saab 9 3 linear's water pump.

Re : the computer , they better cover it under warranty or they ****.
Re : the water pump , you have a leak and they say it is the water pump , I have no reason to doubt that they have honestly checked out the problem and determined that a new water pump is the only solution but , damn $ 1000 is pretty steep. I would look around for another mechanic for a second opinion and a quote. Avoid dealerships. Not sure what engine you have but i just looked in my saab with a 2.3 and hope I never have to do mine. I am pretty good with a wrench but I know there would be lots of swearing involved.

How much oil is left in the engine? Is the timing belt broken? Did the engine overheat? What color was the smoke? Is there oil in the coolant in the radiator?

How to time engine in a 2003 saab 93 2.0 turbo and where is the diverter valve located

if coolant is not 50% antifreeze
many things can crack and leak water.
did you do that, run near pure water in coolant?

i say buy the FSM and 100% for sure on any SAAB .
most shops here look at a SAAB and scratch head.
they have some very odd engineering on them. very odd.
get the the book and win.

2001 Saab 9-3 PROBLEM WITH WATER IN THE OIL

Easy solution is a blocked engine breather, though I've not come across this for over 20 years now. Most likely is the head gasket has failed. Is your radiator water level dropping regularly? If so, it is another good indicator if you can find no other leak.

A better question: how long will synthetic engine oil protect the engine? I don't put a lot of mile on the Saab 9-3, 1999.

You need to change the oil every year or 10.000 miles. The oil will be polluted with foreign material like water, sulpur etc.

I am a single woman that was definitely taken advantage of and sold a Saab 900 SE that was a lemon and every month something has fallen off of it or stopped working. Unfortunately I did not have the money...

Hi Carolyn

It sounds bad I have to be honest, you most likely blew the head gasket when the rad leaked, did the car overheat at all? did the smoke have a sweet smell to it or was it think smoke like oil etc please clarify

Regards

Oil in coolant . oil cooler bad but which one

Oil generally will get into the coolant due to a headgasket leaking, or a cracked head.

You'll need to pressurize both systems (OIl & Cooling) to try & determine where the leak is coming from. .

Antifreeze in the oil can cause the pistons to sieze in the cylinders and if you've got oil in the anti-freeze, you more than likely have anti-freeze in the oil, or soon will.

Good luck.

1999 Saab 9-5 4cyl wagon overheats

Almost for sure the head gasket. You don't have to replace the engine, but pull the head, have it leveled, get a new gasket and head bolts and replace.

This can be done without removing the engine, but it is a bit tricky. Very tight getting the head off to the front. If you have done some mechanics, can be done. I have done this once. It did take a bit.

Please let me know if you still have the car and we can talk.

Could be a few other issues, but these are very rare. Cracked head, etc...
