Before you make any other moves, I would try having the transmission flushed and refilled and filters changed and if that doesn't work, you may have burned out the modulator so you may have to shop around for another transmission or have that one rebuilt, whichever would be feasibly financial for you.

SOURCE: Car won't go forward or reverse
i don't think that your mechanic had done his job right
take it to another mechanic and ask him to look it over
if he can write up a report about then make the previous mechanic pay for any damages and workmanship
he has not put the shafts in properly so the car is spinning in a scene but due to there being no connection to the wheels that why it wont move
you have got one of the best motor cars on the road and it is a shame some one had taken advantage of your car
i suggest if he did not do it properly you must get justice as you have got a good car you don't know how many us cars i have seen on here today but only one BMW and 2 japinese cars keep it and look after it
hope this helps and good luck
let me know what happens

SOURCE: BMW X5 Trans Fail Safe Program,
sometimes it will clear if you turn the X5 off and restart it. however, it could be an early indication that the tranny is about to expire. i have had it happen and it cleared with a power cycle, but also had friends where it cleared for a few weeks/months and returned. this time it was really the transmission that went bad. if you can't get it to clear, then i'd suggest taking it to the dealer and have them plug into it to have a better look.

hi , you may need to get the gear box oil level checked as this seams that it may be a little low , you could also tryrunning the engine for a minute or so , this would allow the oil to warm up and hopefully engage the first gear correctly , regards mark
