Question about 1986 Chevrolet K1500
Trans just stopped working. didn't show any signs of going out, no slipping or anything. fluid shows full on dipstick and is a little dark but not burnt dark. it was working fine and I got stuck in snow and put it in 4x4 n was spinnin n rockin it and got it out and then it just stopped working. I looked under it and it blew fluid out of the overflow ontop of the trans and out of the dip stick but still shows its full. when its cold it will move but once it warms up it slips then wont move at all.
Have a pressure test done on the transmission to determine if there is mechanical failure in side. Remove the pan and do a check of the band and clutch packs as something may have broken . The sudden changing of direction under rpm's will cause damage to the mechanicals in the box.

take it to a shop and have them top it up so you can be sure you have the fluid you need to keep the car going as it should,,,,thats your safest bet

SOURCE: 4l60e slips in 3rd and 4th
There are to many things that can cause this problem, best thing to is go get the ECM scanned for DTC codes at a transmission shop or Auto zone or Parts Source since they scan for free.
The ECM should have DTC code in it's memory on how the transmission is Performing and have the Transmission line tested for Fluid pressure.
Good luck and hope this helps. Oh and also ways check with more then on transmission shop if there tell you that you need a new Transmission,
It could be a simple as the transmission filter falling off causing the lost of transmission fluid pressure. Check the transmission fluid too.
