SOURCE: I. Want to know what color of wire goes in the alternator for 1996 rav4

Hi there:
It might be different on a RAV4, but here's a description of that connector from a 2.0L engine:

"S" (Pin 3, white wire) - Sense line. It will eventually make its way back to the battery through several fuses. If this line is bad (corrosion, broken wire, blown ALT-S fuse), the alternator will overcharge, trying to compensate since it is not sensing enough voltage. Disconnect the battery, and check for continuity of this pin to the positive battery terminal and the alternator terminal. Both should be very close to 0 ohms.

"IG" (Pin 2, red-blue wire) - Supplies power for the regulator from the Gauge fuse. Should be 0V when the car is shut off, 13-15V when turned on.

"L" (Pin 1, yellow wire) - Goes to the charge warning light.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

My 99 escort hes a big plug going into the alternator with many wires. It also has a large wire bolted onto the alternator. I want to know where the single wire plug goes into the alt.

Did you replace the Alternator ? The standard generator provides 95 amps, Coupe, and 75 amps, Sedan and Wagon, of direct current to charge the vehicle battery. It has an integral voltage regulator. Maybe they gave you the one !

1989 dodge 250 the red ignition wire is getting hot and melting in two when the key is turned to the run position

Blue wire to ignition switch, from alternator voltage regulator.( 12 volts ) ECU power wire, Red wire to battery terminal. Blue wire goes from alternator to the ignition switch. The voltage regulator senses the incoming voltage from the blue wire. ) it grounds the green field wire This energizes the alternator field, and the alternator begins to produce a charge and sends it to the battery via the main output wire. When the voltage regulator senses 14 volts from the blue field wire, it cuts the ground to the green field wire. Good-Day!

Thank you for your quick answer to my alternater problem. But I was kinda hoping to find out what each of the three wires on the multi pin connecter went to. Ya see one place that tested my alternator only...

Three wires 'normal' alternator uses:
  • a battery wire
  • ignition/warning light wire
  • voltage sensing wire: voltage sensing is used when you want the alternator to read voltage at some other point than the battery
Depending on your alterantor, you can also have 'self exciting' alternators that only requires two wires (battery and ignition) or even one wire (battery).

You really need to know what you are doing to install a subsitute alternator with different wiring or risk 'frying' your car electrical!

You have 3 wires to the alternator. The black/gray wire goes to the fuse panel to the ignition. The dark green/ orange wire goes to the engine controls system. The third wire dark green goes to the powertrain control module. The red and black/gray are tied together from battery to the alternator as well the ignition switch to make a circuit. Hope this will help you.
