Take a sniff of that smoke and I believe it will smell like antifreeze. If yes then head gasket, cracked head.

SOURCE: white smoke comes out tail pipe

Its perfectly normal.Hot exhaust gases mixing with cold air and by products of the combustion process create the watery substance that you see spit out .Dual fuel (LPG,Hydrogen etc) vehicles do this a lot more noticably.By products of the combustion process are various but water vapour is one of them.Alot of heat is generated by the exhaust so watching a car driving in very cold conditions you can see this effect more clearly

SOURCE: White Smoke From Tail Pipe/Exhaust

It often means that you are burning antifreeze. You asked if it needs antifreeze, have you noticed any leaking out of the reservoir tank while you are running it? Sometimes when the head gasket goes it will produce a passage for the antifreeze to pass from the capillaries into the combustion chamber. It is easy to check if you have an air compressor. Remove one of the rear sparkplugs and the radiator cap. Fill the radiator and then push some air into the sparkplug hole (get a good seal in case a valve is open). Repeat with all the cylinders and watch for air bubbles coming up into the radiator. If bubbles come up or fluid is pumped out, the head gasket is blown and must be replaced. It is more likely to happen at the back of the engine because it is farthest away from the fan and therefore gets less cooling. Also check your oil for discoloration. If it is a brownish color it could mean your oil and antifreeze are mixing and has the potential to damage your bearings

SOURCE: car is hard to start, keeps stalling, white smoke coming out of tail pipe

It sounds to me like you have a head gasket leaking. See if you can get a gauge and check each cylinder. Are you using alot of anti freeze?

Limited. Why would it be smoking after replacing one plug?

what smokes. we are blind here.
you must stay.

1: end of tail pipe smokes
2: or, with hood up the exhaust manifold smokes due to oil we dropped there. (common on much service)
and what color is it.?
from where.?
tail pipe can do 3 colors
white goes away fast ,called steam.
white stays way too long called burned oil smoke,
and black (unburned fuel) and smells like gas..

No power when I step on the gas and is smoking bad

Smoke from tail pipe or smoke from under hood?
A general rule of thumb if it is coming from tail pipe the color of smoke will tell you a lot.

White and thick means head gasket failure, Blue means oil is being burned.

I would recommend you check the seal of everything and make sure it is cleaned that had to do with vacuum or fuel distribution. EGR valve (gasket fails sometimes) IAC valve, MAP and MAF sensors, Fuel injectors, FPR (this will need replaced if leaking),

Also check you coolant and oil look for signs of either one mixing with one another, smell you coolant and make sure it don't smell like gas either, look around where the head meets the block and make sure you don't have any coolant leaking there. The smoke if from the tail pipe makes me think head gasket and these are simple checks. They are not 100% diagnosis but can lead you to the problem.

Also one obvious thing would be make sure no one put anything in your gas tank.

I would most likely look at the injectors first then the head gasket next.

2004 f350 white smoke

  • Hi, I can help.

  • I don't like to give bad news. So I hope you understand that bad news comes with vehicles from time to time. But I see you have asked this question three times so I will answer you.

  • White smoke, when blown out the tailpipe more than a few seconds on a cold day, means you have water in your engine. The causes can be many with some being more common.

  1. Head gasket.
  2. Cracked head.
  3. Cracked block.

  • As for why it runs and then shuts down and then a little later starts up... probably because it's overheating and your truck is meant to shutdown after a certain temperature is hit.

  • A compression test and a leak down test are whats recommended to get a grasp of which cylinders has the leak. If you don't fix this the anti-freeze leaking into your crankcase will continue to flush your bearings of oil and seize the engine

  • Symptoms can be but are not limited to ---
  1. Extended white smoke out of the tail pipe.
  2. Said white smoke smells very sweet.
  3. Oil will take the color of chocolate milk.

  • If you have and comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

Coolant levels keep going down. no visable leaking with lots and lots of white smoke coming from tail pipe. this is an f350 powerstroke. what may be problem and about what is cost to fix?

Check the radiator cap. there could be a slight leak from there in terms of vapors, which is quite discernible after a few miles.

White smoke coming from my tail pipe when I accelerate

You may have a blown piston ring, valve seals, valve guides, cracked head gasket or a cracked block, etc... It sounds major though for you to lose power suddenly and have all that smoke...
