Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

2003 CTS, engine misses at between 40-60kms with high RPM's (3000ish)and seems to have no power usually when it's very cold outside seems only to happen in the morning or after it has been parked for for few hours. The problem goes away after about 5-10mins. The pitch of the car is a lot lower and all is well again. Had the tranny checked and couldn't find any issues. I did have the rad replaced though because the cooling lines snapped after hitting a snow bank the problem seemed to start after this was done. Could it stem from this?

There are several checks that can be done to try and determine the problem. Firstly run the fault codes to see if a fault has been recorded and fix what ever you find.. Missing at high rpm means either HT leads /plugs and coil failure and it also may be low fuel pressure in the fuel manifold so have a pressure test done on the manifold to check for pump/regulator and filter problems. It may be also that the cat converter has failed and is tending to block the exhaust at rpms. A common occurrence when a hot converter is immersed in cold snow and ice.

you should have hot water on all rad. hoses when the motor is running at a norm. temp. the water is not going through the heater core like it should. you have cutoff valve bad low water are a stopped heater.try a hoter thermostat if none of the above are true.

SOURCE: My 330CI BMW won't start and the batter seems good.

could be a wet ecu.
i have an e36 and these units get wet and fail, false readings, sliggish performance...till they blow up...

check the notes below

the ecu compartment is under the windshield on the passenger side on E36

you gain acess to it under the hood....
this compartment gets wet, the ecu lays on a flat surface in that
compartment.

the bottom side of the circuit board gets wet and starts corrosion.

remove the ecu, take the bottom plate off, clean the bottom of the circuit
board with alcohol and a soft tooth brush.

you should be able to see the signs of corrosion or conductive build up.

this gunk bridges solder points doing all sort s of wierd things to your
car, including false sensor readings from asc/abs controllers and other
sensors....

all the way to engine failure and worst case burnt and shorted wiring
harness.

I'm on my 3rd ecu, took me and the repair boys a few years to figure this
one out.

BTW: i would get that ecu mounted above that flat surface, use some sort
of standoff to raise it so that it is not laying in the wet.

Hi-Speed Miss under load on Park Avenues - Both Ultra and Non-supercharged

Dear sir/madam,

I think he crank sensor is defective, or installed wrong. The cam sensor controls fuel injector timing and can cause sputtering and hesitation. The timing must be correct for the injector to fire when the intake valve is opening. Check for any scratch marks on the cam sensor. In addition, check the cam interrupter magnet and be sure it in place and not damaged.

The ECM sends a 5-volt reference signal to the CTS sensor. As temperature changes in the coolant, the electrical resistance of the CTS sensor also changes. The best way to test this sensor is with a scanner. When the engine is cold, engine coolant temperature should measure near the same as the ambient temp. Another way to test the CTS sensor is to measure voltage from the time the engine is started, until it warms up. Record the voltage changes as the engine warms up to operating temp. i.e. 120, 140, 160 & 180. You should see close to the full range of voltage (5.0-1.0V) during this test. If it does not change from what you first measured cold, replace the sensor!

thanks
good luck

Check fuel pressure, and exhaust back pressure, Exhaust backpressure high would indicate restricted flow... probably restricted converter.

My 2003 suburban seems to run at a higher rpm.

Hummm, 2000 rpm does not seem high, really. But another item to look at is your FAN. The clutch fan fails and drives the fan full engauge. Sounds like a jeep...massive sounding, relating to engine RPM, but not necessarily different.

I mentiont his because a trans does not typically fail and give a few hundred RPM. Usually a slipping sensation is described....

REVS TOO HIGH WHEN COLD...........

High RPM is by purpose. Reason is to get engine hot as quickly as possible to reduce emissions. There is nothing to worry about. I am sure if engine is warm/hot then you wont see high RPM even if you resart it.
