Question about 2004 Ford F150
When turning the dail to 4 hi or 4lo the truck will not go into 4x4 nor does it light up indicating 4x4
Sometimes the Selector knob will break on the backside. You think that it is turning something and it is not. Pry the knob off and check for cracks near the clip in the knob.
Burnt out Selector bulb. On the one wire style Transfer case, the shift solenoid is extended into position by variable Voltage. Sometimes it is only 1/4 Volt between each setting to make the difference. When the shift light burns out, it can either skew the Voltage higher or cut power to the solenoid. For the 1 wire style, if you put on a Voltmeter and turned the shift Selector with the power from the truck active, you could see if the Voltage changed at each Selector choice.

sounds like it's the motor is going bad or has a bad connection, try cleaning the connector if there isn't any gunk in the connector, check the manual see if there is a ohmn test you can run on the motor, if not i'd replace the motor.
