The most common concerns on this model are going to be faulty injectors, you can perform a buzz test to check them. The next is high pressure oil system leaks, especially at the STC fitting above the HPOP.

SOURCE: 98 Escort Hard starting when hot

sounds like a dodgy mis reading of a sensor caused by electrical resistance which is turning choke on and flooding engine.know the fault but without car in front of me its difficult to diagnose, could be auto choke sensor which is on right hand side of cylinder head ,but not is probally dealer have you tried spark plug gaps ??25th although this would cause problems with cold starting not hot starting but its worth a look

Check the connections under the FICM. (fuel injection control module) It is on top of the left valve cover. It is the big silver flat box. There is 3 connectors underneath that should be "clicked" onto the module. Do this with the key off as there is a very high voltage there.

You may have a bad idle control valve. If you want to replace fuel pump yourself you will have to remove bed of truck or fuel tank.

SOURCE: Ford 150 runs rough when cold

Hi! Either the elbow at back of intake manifold is leaking or your intake gaskets are leaking. A very common occurance on both items and either one will set a lean code and illuminate the check engine light. Hope this info helps!

some of the glow plug have had it, rough idle ,andsmoking after a hard start is typical symptom of some of the glow plugs not working.what happens then,is because you keep trying to start it,the remaining glowplugs get over heated with continuous heating up so they toss it in then it gets to the point where it wont start squirt some starter fluid ,or aerostart into th air cleaner and you will probablyfind it will start strait away if so anew set of glow plugs is in order ----"youdoit"

Why does it have rough idle, black smoke, and high fuel consumption?

It's running extremely rich. Have the fuel pressure and fuel pump checked.

Occasionally runs rough

This is usually caused by a bad crankshaft postion sensor.

Blowing black smoke

far too much fuel not getting completely burned upon iginition.
That leads on to look at:
-fouled fuel injectors, (clean them - run injector cleaner)
-lack of air to the intake (filter and clear out tubing),
-spark plugs are fouled, (replace them, ensure wires seated correctly on plug)
-ignition power is low or partial, (ignition system module not sending enough electricity to plugs)
-ignition wires are bad, (check/replace)
-ECM is failing or getting bad sensor readings. (shop diagnosis)
-cat convertors have been removed and sensors are at fault
Its a long list -- do the easy stuff yourself, leave hard stuff to a shop diagnosis.

Purge valve

This problem is likely caused by excess fuel leaking into the engine after shutoff. Two likely causes are: leaky fuel injector(s) or bad fuel pressure regulator. To confirm or eliminate this, check to see if once you do get the engine to start again, does it run rough and exhaust some black smoke at first, then gradually smooth out.

Other reasons for this behavior (assuming it starts normally when cold) can be a bad engine coolant sensor, bad catalytic converter, faulty idle air control valve and others.

99 ford ranger, idles rough till it warms up,then runs good. Hard to start after it gets hot, it acts as if it is starved for fuel. Once it does crank it runs fine.

First thought: Check the idle air control valve, or whatever its Ford equivalent is. Sometimes these start to stick and cause the rough early idle that smooths out later.

Blue smoke is OIL
Black smoke is RICH MIXTURE
White smoke is WATER (head gasket).

I would take it to a garage and get it tuned up, timing, and carb adjustment for mixture. You need an exhaust sniffer to best do that.

If you have far too much fuel in the cylinders, it can seep past the rings under pressure. That much fuel would make it run rough and contaminate the oil.

Hard starting diesel, at approxamately anytime temp gets below 45 degrees F. runs rough when started, smokes, then once warmed up no problem. Has quit on me twice in traffic.

only 2 things can maake a diesel run rough at start up ,,1--- air in the system 2----- 1 or more of the glow plugs not working. this sounds like the latter ,if you have a couple of glow plugs not working ,it will miss on those cylinders until it warms up ,and the smoke is mostll exesive fuel when it does fire . recommend you check the glow plugs

A scan for trouble codes may point you in the right direction quickly, rather than hit & miss, with replacing parts. Some of the autoparts stores will scan for free, and your right where you need to be to get the right part at the same time.
