Question about 1994 Ford Ranger Supercab

Sorta sharp shaking vibration in 1994 ford ranger

I cant drive faster than 30 first happen when I was going 55 on highway. very hard, shaking vibration seemed to be coming from rear wheels. sounded like something was locking up. now any movement of truck has constant jerking motion emanating from somewhere underneath and to the rear.

It sounds like an ignition problem. I need to know if you have scanned the computer for fault codes?

Check the U-joints and axle baerings. But its most likely because the truck is in four wheel drive.

Does the jerking feel like a fish bite ( especially when pulling a hill?) if so it may need plugs and wires

if you have one bad plug wire the problem seems to smooth out at higher speeds

The carrier bearing should not move at all. It is mounted in rubber to give a little. But, it should not move freely. If this is the case then something has gone bad. The carrier bearing would cause this vibration as it spins if it is loose.

I am a retired Ford dealer technicain and have seen this exact symptom many times, the front differential does not cause this, the Transfer Case clutch does cause it, you most likely had a remanufactured Transfer Case installed, as seldom if ever is a new one used due to the cost.
My first suggestion is have the fluid in the case changed and have them add a bottle of of friction modifier (commonly used in Limited Slip Differentials), it should be done every 30,000 miles, the transfer case uses Ford ATF and it is easy to do the service yourself.

Service the Transfer case:

  • Elevate the Expidition with a jack or tire ramps, if you're unable to comfortably crawl underneath it. If you're using a jack, make sure the truck is secure on jack stands before working under it.

  • Locate the "fill" plug on the rear of the transfer case to the left of the drive shaft. Unscrew the fill plug with a 1 1/8-inch hex socket wrench.

  • Use your finger to check if the fluid is below the bottom of the fill hole. If it is, you need to add fluid.

  • Drain the fluid, instead of refilling it, if it's been more than 30,000 miles since it was last changed in your Ford truck. Place a drain pan under the transfer case "drain" plug before removing the plug with the socket wrench.

  • Replace the drain plug after the fluid has completely drained or the flow has slowed to a trickle into the drain pan.

  • Refill the transfer case through the fill opening with approximately 2 quarts Motorcraft Mercon automatic transmission fluid plus a 1/2 bottle of Friction Modifier (Any brand will work, Stalube makes it in a tube, add 1/2 tube) using a funnel or pump. Replace the fill plug.


  • If this doesn't resolve the Transfer Case clutch chatter you will need the unit repaired.

    See if the wheel bearings are ok Sometimes if you jack the vehicle up and spin the tires by hand you can find this. Just a thought as mine did that and noise went away after it was repaired.

    My 2002 2 wheel has vibration in front end whan i go 55-60 miles per hour. alot of shake in the steering wheel also. what could be the culprit


    Hi Mikey. Take the vehicle for wheel balancing and alignment. Get the technician at the centre to inspect the steering and suspension linkages while he's doing the alignment, but I think wheel balancing will sort out your problem. Regards John

    How would i know if my cv joint is going bad on my 94 ford ranger 2 wheel drive


    A two wheel drive ranger does not have any c.v. Joints. It does have u joints in the rear drive shaft. Worn out u joints can cause vibrations at highway speeds, squeezing noises at low speeds, and in some cases a clunking noise when the transmiissin is placed in park or drive. You can check them by pulling the drive shaft and ratting the joint. If it is stiff or loose than they are likely bad. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.     If it shakes at 25 mph then the u joints are worn or you have bent the drive shaft. Ujoint vibration starts around 30 and gets worse as you increase in speed.

    Couple things it could be:

    Busted belt in the front tire (left or right)

    Bad ball joint

    Bad shock

    Bad tie rod

    My 2004 automatic ford ranger shifts hard


    The tranny problem sounds like it is out of fluid hopefully, or more likely the shift solenoid, and clutch packs are sticking and that requires a rebuild. The "almost misfire" sound like a clogged injector just pour son injector cleaner in there. I recommend using a brand called PowerService "DieselClean" you can get it almost anywhere. As for the dying , I had an 04 danger ranger and mine would shut down while I was driving and i had to pull over and push the fuel system manual override "which is a button under the passenger side dash" and then it would start again. I was never able to figure that one out.
