Check for clean shine terminals and battery posts . Check ING fuses and fusible link . Have you put the battery in with the correct polarity to earth. Have you checked the battery ( replacement ) with a load tester to see if it has a dead cell as well.

SOURCE: Vw Golf 98 clicking sound from engine when starting

If it just clicks when you are trying to start, the battery is low, near dead and needs recharge or replace.
If it starts and strange clicking continues, it is a sign of hydraulic valve lifters not functioning properly --which can be caused by low oil pressure (because of low oil level or bad oil pump). If the battery is good and drains dead after a while --something is connected that should not be. Even your dome light can do that --or the headlights on --or the parking lights on. Check the oil level, if low, add oil and check again.

SOURCE: Loud clicking noise whenstarting vw golf 1998

it could be noisy lifters... do you have clean oil in there oil is it black.

dirty oil will make volkwagens make lots of engine noise.

it also could be a spark arcing to metal. check to see all your spark plug wires are pushed all the way down and dont have cracks in them.

SOURCE: 1998 Toyota Camry --- car intermittenly won't

When the bushes in a starter get worn, it can cause the armature to rub on the magnetic poles (poleing) This can cause the starter turn slow or not at all
The sintered metal bushes are like bearings. Not to be confused with carbon brushes which are the electrical connectors.
When a starter clicks, it is the solenoid you can hear.supplying power through the brushes.

A starter that is poleing, often stops in a place where it isnt rubbing, and works fine the next start.
There can be other problems with a starter , perhaps one of the brushes is sticking, or the solenoid.
When it happens a tap with a hammer on the starter or solenoid, while a friend turns the key, is enough to get it working( this isnt a fix but might get you started in an emergency)

There is also the possibility of a loose or dirty cable connection, from when the new battery was installed

I have a 93 mitsubishi montero has power wont start. Good battery new starter. Was completley dead replaced the battery connectors now has power but just clicks when i try to turn it over. what to do?

you may have to replace the cable going to the starter. it can corrode inside the casing, causing a lot of resistance. that would cause a clicking noise from the starter

Didn't know my 93 vw golf had an alarm, now I had to disconnect the battery to shut if off.. what do I do to fix this?

I'm not sure if you have an aftermarket or factory alarm, but try this: hook up the battery and try unlocking/locking the door with the key. If you have a remote door lock, hit unlock/lock on that. I have come across a couple of cars this was all it took to stop the alarm, never tried with a VW though. Hope it works, good luck!

if there is a clicking noise, its probably the solenoid on the starter. that unit pushes the starter motor forward and also connects the live of the starter.
