Main causes of misfire would be loss of spark; the air/fuel mixture is too far out of balance to ignite; or loss of compression.

Loss of spark includes anything that prevents coil voltage from jumping the electrode gap at the end of the spark plug. Causes include worn, fouled or damaged spark plugs, bad wires or even a cracked distributor cap. A weak coil or excessive rotor gas inside a distributor would affect all cylinders, not just a single cylinder.

"Lean misfire" can occur when the air/fuel mixture is too lean (not enough gasoline in the mixture) to burn. This can be caused by a dirty, clogged or inoperative fuel injector; air leaks; or low fuel pressure because of a weak pump, restricted filter or leaky pressure regulator.

Loss of compression means the cylinder loses most of its air/fuel mixture before it can be ignited. The most likely causes here are a leaky (burned) exhaust valve or a blown head gasket. If two adjacent cylinders are misfiring, it's likely the head gasket between them has failed. Also, if an engine is overheating or losing coolant, it's likely the head gasket is the culprit.

You can isolate the weak cylinder by temporarily disconnecting each of the spark plug wires, one at a time, while the engine is idling. When there's no change in the idle speed, then you have pinpointed the weak cylinder.

Hi, the first step I recommend is to check for spark. You can do this by starting the car and then carefully pulling up the boot to the #1 ignition wire at the coil. If sparks are jumping inside the boot, you have spark and the ignition system is working.

1. Ignition: If there is no spark, shut of the engine and use an ohmmeter to check the impedance of the coil. Take the boot off, and connect your ohmmeter from the coil terminal to the engine ground. The resistance should be around 10-20 kohms. If not, replace the coil. If yes, the problem is the ignition module under the coil.

Now, assuming you have spark (which I believe you do, because the coil runs 2 cylinders, and you only have one cylinder that is misfiring), the problem will be a lack of compression or a bad injector (or possibly the injector wiring).

Note: I will provide repair steps once the troubleshooting is complete and the problem identified.
Also, if you do not have a multimeter, you can get one for $10-20 at radio shack or even Walmart. It will save you money overall--or maybe you have a friend that you could borrow a meter from.

2. Injector: The next easiest test to run is to see if the injector solenoid is clicking. You can do this by holding a long screwdriver to the injector and hold the other end of the screwdriver to your ear. With the engine running, you should hear the injector clicking. If not, you have a bad injector or a wiring problem. To determine whether the problem is the injector or the wiring, pull the connector off the injector and measure the AC voltage in the connector with the engine running. The voltage should be 1-2 volts or similar to that voltage of any other injector connector.
If the voltage is good, but the injector is not clicking, replace the injector.

3. Valves/compression: the last possible reason for a misfire is a lack of compression. The intake valve must open to accept a fuel/air charge, and both valves must be closed for the cylinder to fire. Sometimes an exhaust valve will burn and not hold compression. A blown head gasket can also cause this problem. The test we use to check the valves is a compression test. You can borrow or purchase a compression tester if you get to this point. Remove a few of the spark plugs including the cylinder that is misfiring. Screw the compression tester into the spark plug hole and crank the engine for a few revolutions. Record the pressure on the gauge, release the pressure, and go on to the next cylinder. If the pressure is much lower on any cylinder as compared to the highest cylinder, the cylinder head will have to be removed to correct the issue.

After replacing the coil, plug and wire. The injector is working properly so I would say that you have a burnt exhaust valve. Get a cylinder leak down test or compression test to confirm this at a reputable mechanic.

Why is the kb 250 engine warning light flashing continuosly?


the is called the CEL , check engine light , aka. SES or MIL.
in the USA< the EPA mandates that flashing,"OBD2 rules" SAE.org.
it means :
your engine runs so bad, (misfire,etc) that the rich mixture
will burn the CAT up soon.
it says in the operators guide, if you choose to read it.
to drive slow, remove trailers and loads. and get it fixed soon.

this is to avoid the $1000 bill for a new CAT.

I am in the USA so my reply is somewhat limited.
ETC is electronic throttle control. I would suggest you get the engine computer scanned for trouble codes, hopefully you'll find something to check out.

Your first mistake is thinking that the only thing that can cause a misfire is a coil or spark plug. Misfires can be caused by MANY things, including faulty fuel injectors, injector control circuits, blown head gaskets, vacuum leaks, burned valves, broken valve springs, low compression due to cylinder damage, worn piston rings, damaged or worn camshafts, etc..

I would recommend getting this problem properly diagnosed by a professional. Failure to fix misfire codes promptly can cause severe engine damage and destroy high-dollar parts like oxygen Sensors, catalytic converters, engine blocks and cylinder heads.

You have misfire codes,etc they
will have to be more though

There has not been a tune-up in 25 years
All that is even related is spark plugs

While driving the car started to miss badly, the check engine light came on then began to flash. checked for codes, engine missfire was the only stored code. owners man. said cat. problem ?


It's not a cat problem or you'd have misfires on all cylinders. P0300 is random misfires, and the codes increment to show what cylinder is misfiring. P0301 is a misfire on cylinder 1, P0302 is cylinder 2, etc. You likely have a bad coilpack. Whichever cylinder is indicated, replace that coilpack.
