Question about Chevrolet Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

Just had oil change done and fuel filter replaced on 1995 Chevy Sportvan G20. It got home just fine, but after sitting long enough to eat, got ready to crank it and it would not start. After several tries, got it cranked and it kept cranked for about 10 or 15mins. Got out of the driveway, and 3 houses down and it cut off. Now it wont stay cranked again. Any ideas or suggestions?

Start with the obvious: Check engine compartment for any loose or disconnected vacuum lines or plug wires. One may have been inadvertently pulled loose then became fully disconnected.

SOURCE: vehicle just keeps cranking wont start.

Make sure that your fuel presure is up to at least 60 psi if not that could be your problem. If not, make sure you are getting spark, if not could be your Crank sensor or ingniton module ECM. Usually if your Engine control module wouldn't be bad because of your fuel pump is working, but may not be putting out the proper pressure for the fuel system. Fuel Pumps are a Problem with that year..

try to start the car, than the anti theift would shut the car off. you wait ten min with the key on, until you see the anti theift flash or disapear. than turn key to off position and try to start it. this will reprogram the computer.. Good luck.

you can also try disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes

SOURCE: 1997 Chevy Silverado, Starting issue: I have

The best way to help find the problem, is to have a fuel pressure test done on it, that will tell if the fuel pump is weak, or the fuel pressure regulator is malfunctioning. If the pressure is low, the fuel pump is weak,
if it is high, the fuel regulator is at fault.

My first thought would be a vacuum leak in one of the hoses. Rubber hoses get brittle with age and even a small crack in a hose may cause surging. Happened to me in a Lumina.

Sounds like a bad fuel pump or a hole in the line somewhere in between sucking air. Don't understand if this is Carburated model and the fuel pump is on the motor - then replace it. Could be a bad spot inside the tank on the sending unit that where the hole is above the fill line or amount of fuel is below the hole and again, it's sucking air rather than fuel.
If is an electric fuel pump under the vehicle then check all the wiring to it, check the relay which may be weak or corrosion around the fuse.
If this is carburator with big nut on end of fuel line into the carb. from the fuel pump on the motor. - there is a filter inside this nut into the carb. - do not get this backwards and be careful of spring that comes out with it, and that you don't cross-thread this nut while assembling.
Not really enough info to go further.
Some fuel pumps are in front of rear wheel under vehicle if equipped with Throttle-Body, and or
If you have low oil, there is a low oil cutoff on my G20 Van (Shaggin' Wagon) You may want to check, short out or remove the wire to this temporarily to eliminate this.
Canada Rocks!
Good luck.

The small front door vent or "wing" windows are pressed into place with a special gasket cloth. Best done by a glass shop.

1992 G20 Chevy van died going 80 mph acts like out of gas but pump is pumping could this be distributor rotary or what

I would go over your basics
check fuel pressure
check fuel filter
check for spark
Low fuel pressure can cause all types of power problems. If all of them check out fine, I would check your exhaust converters for blockage.

If vehicle was left outside or in an unheated garage, there is a strong possibility that condensation has contaminated your fuel. Easiest way to check is to remove fuel filter and pour contents into a glass jar. If you see two different layers of liquid in the jar, the bottom part is water. Replace with new filter and drop the tank. Remove sending unit. pour contents into a large container and clean out inside with clean dry rags. Remember, fuel is dangerous to work with and fumes travel pretty far on the ground. So, no open flames electrical stuff, cigarettes etc for a good perimeter around work area. Generally, you can re-use top 3/4 of fuel you removed by syphon. Don't use remainder in your vehicle. Part can be used for lawnmower etc as long as you only take the part above the water line.
