90 olds cutlass wont start - flooding

Wont start unless I unplug the fuel pump and crank, once started I can reconnect the fuel pump and It will start and stay running as long as I keep my foot on the gas. Runs really good like that!

sounds like you have a huge vacuum leak at the engine, check under the hood for a sucking noise, I think you will find one.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
See Figure 1

  1. Relieve fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Raise the vehicle and safely support.
  4. Drain the fuel tank.
0900c152800cc4f3.jpgFig. 1: The electric fuel pump has an in-tank design
  1. Disconnect wiring from the tank.
  2. Remove the ground wire retaining screw from under the body.
  3. Disconnect all hoses from the tank.
  4. Support the tank on a jack and remove the retaining strap nuts.
  5. Lower the tank and remove it.
  6. Notice the position of the filter for replacement. Support the pump with one hand and grasp the filter with the other. Rotate the filter in one direction, then pull off of the pump. Discard the filter.
  7. Disconnect the fuel pump connector, on wagons it will not be necessary.
  8. On all models excluding wagons:
    1. Place the sending unit on a bench upside down, then pull the fuel pump downwards to remove from the mounting bracket. Tilt the pump outwards and remove from the pulsator.
  9. On wagons proceed as follows:
    1. Disconnect the negative terminal nut and lead (black) from the pump.
    2. Disconnect the positive lead (gray) from the pump, then loosen the coupler clamps.
To install:
  1. On all models excluding wagons:
    1. Assemble the rubber bumper and insulator onto the pump.
    2. Position the fuel sender assembly upside down and install the fuel pump between the pulsator and mounting bracket.
    3. Connect the pump electrical connector.
  2. On all wagon models:
    1. Position the fuel sender assembly upside down and install the coupler and coupler clamps to the inlet tube, but do not tighten at this time.
    2. Install the pump between the coupler and the mounting bracket, then tighten the clamps so that 5-8 teeth are engaged.
    3. Attach the positive lead (gray) to its positive terminal with the nut, then attach the negative lead (black) to the negative terminal.Always install a new filter when installing a new pump.
  3. Position the pump filter on the new pump and push the outer edge of the ferrule until it is fully seated.
  4. Install the sending unit.
  5. Install the gas tank and check for leaks.
  6. Reconnect the battery cable.da5e8e9.jpg

must be 90s week?
no starts, but cranks fully and full crank speed, which is near 300 rpm, called robust cranking but notarts.
its flooded.
(compression not above150PSI) means the timing belt has slipped.
and will never run right again, ever do the 60k tuneup yet.
if not , why not?
flooding.? so many way to flood.
1: spark plug tips x4 all wet with fuel.
use the cracking (wide open throttle like the op.guide shows)
this cuts all fuel, (EFI)
2: no spark, check spark x4 and if all 4 are dead, try the coil.
if the coil is dead, no spark there, then the dizzy is toast.
90 cars are a stand alone dizzy, meaning ECU is not doing this.
3: Flooding can be caused by other things.
see em all here.
over 28 ways !
but there are only really 3 ways.
1: bad engine (60k tuneup skipped.)
2: bad spark
3: bad fueling.

it is one of those,
there are 2 exceptions.
1: EGR main stuck open. (this kills fueling to start and low rpm)
2: CAT melted (this kills an engine, it cant pump air. )

My calais ran fine until i started going up the bridgei saw black smoke comeing out of the exhaust when it seem like it just smotherd out and shut off , .and want crank up .the engine will spin but it...

Sounds like a failed fuel injector.
Black smoke is usually too much fuel, so I would look for a leaking fuel injector or fuel pressure regulator.
If you pull the fuel pump relay and crank the engine it may start once the plugs dry out. But once you make the pump work again it will probably flood out.

91 olds cutlass supreme runs rough and wont stay idle.

If your vehicle is fuel injected I would say you have a blown fuel regulator. This would cause excess fuel into the cylinders (flooding) causing a miss and coughing and also blow fuel into the air breather. If will also cause the vehicle to run poorly and could cause the vehicle to stall. Also to much fuel on startup can flood the cylinders and cause the vehicle to no start.

start with trying to start the car with your foot hard on gas pedal, all the way to the floor this will stop fuel flow on start up its called clear flood mode. as the engine starts to fire and run ease off the pedal until it idles, it may take some time to run smoothly. if it doesnt run or stalls after a short time and then will not run i would try a ECU engine control unit as it supplies the earth circuit to the injectors, may be thats whats holding them open or they are dribbling badly and require overhauling

3300? When it won't start have you checked it for spark. It might be a crank sensor. We need to determine if the reason it won't run is because of no spark or no fuel.

Car died on road engine turn over but will not start

Try spraying starting fluid into the air intake, with the help of someone else starting the car. As they crank over the car, spray the starting fluid into the air intake. Do this for at least 15 seconds. If the car tries to start up the fuel pump has probably gone bad. When turning the key to the on position do you hear the fuel pump humming? If the pump is not humming the fuel pump is probably bad.

2004 mazda wont start, blew a front tire and had to be put on rollback. Sat all nite, and now wont start. will crank and can smell fuel.

flooded engine common problem remove all plugs and fuel pump fuse. get fuel out of engine do not istall fuel pump fuse re install all plugs I suggest a good charger be used as system can kill batt very quick run to wires from fuel pump fuse into seating area start cranking the engine over wires not touching once compression sounds alright touch wires to geather (may have to repeat these deflooding wire touching procedure many times) once started do not turn off car till normal operating temp . Once hot turn car off remove wires and re install fuel pump fuse .With RX-8 u cannot just start and stop car right away as in washing car as it can produce this same condition ALWAYS let car warm up before turning off.

No start, injector dumping in fuel

When trying to start an engine that you feel might be "flooded" , hold gas pedal down to the floor while cranking . This will stop the injectors from triggering. You might have to remove spark plugs to clean and dry out from fuel. Hope this helps
