Please help I have a 1996 volvo 850 non turbo A few weeks ago it would just die and all the dashboard lights would come on So a new battery and altenator it was running fine Now it will lose acceleration when I driving an sometimes it will die and sometimes if I slam the gas pedal it will be okay but then the car will kinda start jumping and rocking Other times if I come to a stop or slow turn it will die Please help I'm lost ?

Not sure but it could be a throttle body problem as this controlls the the acceleration and tick over

Double check all connections are clean & tight. You need to get a voltmeter and have the voltage tested at battery with engine off & running. Drive it to the Napa shop you bought the alternator from if necessary, they should perform test free of charge, as the possibility of a faulty one is not out of the question, provided all is connected properly. Did you check that a main fuse for alternator wasn't blown in Uunderhood power distribution box?

I am a volvo tech and your problem is fuel pressure ralated and i had same problem in 1995 850 turbo and the fuel pump was the problem and a used one is around 35.00

SOURCE: Car dies at random moments

I just had this problem and replaced the camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, and coolant temp sensor. i replaced these items because of high mileage. try these but first check your relays located under the hood on the passenger side. sometimes they get hot and fail.

1996 volvo 850 powered down, all panel lights came on, car died, generator not charging light had been on for a month (looks like a battery), what could be problem, is it expensive,


when the generator quits the car will run until the battery is drained then it will stop. You need the constant recharging to keep running. Sounds like you will need an alternator. Seek a volvo shop and get estimates.

Is it possible to just remove the turbo from a Volvo 850 Turbo rather than replace it?


Not really buddy your car will run rich and eat gas also you will be down for power.Just source a second hand unit.

Most times, warning lights, engine lights ect, can be reset by disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes or so, but you will also loose any saved radio stations, times, and anything else like that.

had the same problem with my volvo 850. turned out to be a bad fuel pump. i picked one up at my local pull-a-part junkyard for real cheap. put it in and started first try.

Where do i find the reverse light switch fo a 1996 volvo 850 turbo.


Under the shifter console is where the older models are located. Sould be the same for the newer ones as well.It's just a small micro-switch.

Odometer does not work


This is a common problem with all models of volvo, with the non digital odometer  pre 1998,, there is a tiny nylon gear deep inside the odometer that needs to be replaced. Your dealer will not fix it, but will put in a new one for you as the cost of fixing in labour is more than a new one,, My solution is much cheeper,, I have
many low milage VOLVO odometer/instr clusters, a few hi'r km 1s

I have many pre 1998 Volvo instrument clusters, most with Very low milage, almost all in Km, I have most models of Volvo.
