Question about 1999 Mercury Sable

1 Answer

Drivers door wont latch

Drivers door will sometimes latch when closed and at other times it wont. Tried hard and soft closes with no difference in result. when it does latch it seems to hold just fine...just that it may take 20-30 tries to get it to hold. Does the latch need replacing or would a little lubrication such as WD40 work?

I would try lube first. Cold weather can cause parts to get stuck.
Normally a door latch will outlast the car, but it could be wearing out.

SOURCE: seat belt won't retrack after

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

As a first course of action I strongly suggest that you pull the seat belt a little harder This can help the metal ball on the mechanism to break loose. If it breaks loose the seat belt will surely retract. If it doesn't help then I believe that the seat belt reached it's break point and will surely need replacement.

Hope you find this information helpful enough and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Latch door wont close

It won't close or won't latch? Check to see that the latch isn't already in the "latched" position. You may have to release the latch and pull it at the same time.

Either the latch is bad or out of alignment. You will have to have it checked by a mechanic.

YJ wrangler door wont close

Start out by checking the latch mechanism on the door. Use a screwdriver to "trip" the latch with the door open, then pull on the screwdriver against the latch gate. If it doesn't hold then you may have a bad latch (the springs in the latch can go bad over time). You can also try spraying penetrating oil (PB Blaster) into the latch and again using a screwdriver to trip the latch, then open with the handle, and repeat several times to work the oil into the mechanism and free it up (this trick also sometimes works with the springs on wiper arms that have lost tension). If the penetrating oil trick works, think about spraying dry lube or white lithium grease into the latch to help prevent it from happening again. If the door is misaligned, consider new hinge bushings, a misaligned door can cause damage to the door, and put tension on the door latch in a direction that puts pressure on the latch that it wasn't designed for.

Door latch wont latch and keep door shut

Sometimes these get stuck in the closed position...try pulling up on the inside door release before trying to close again...this re-aligns the catch to work properly...if needed then compare the door latch to the same door on the other side to adjust to open/close as needed...Hope this helps.

The drivers door will not close. This just

You'll probably have to pull on the catch mechanism on the door at the same time you pull the handle. I mean the part at the end of the door that catches on the door jam. It has probably latched without being closed, and you will have to unlatch it with your finger or something.

Rear door won't stay shut

Check the latch mechanism on the door. There is a piece of the latch that closes around the clasp on the door frame. sometimes this closes when the door is open and you can't shut the door. Take a screw driver and flip this latch piece open and close the door.

The drivers door on my 96 achieva won't close?!?

If the striker in the door-jam isn't damaged then look/inspect the door latch. It may be damaged and/or rusty, causing it to fail.

Door wont shut

When the door was last Opened the latch must have caught on something and went to the Closed Position. Get a Pair of Pliers and on the Door Where the Latch is Pull it Back Down or Up whichever way that it goes. All makes are Different with This.
