Question about Mitsubishi Colt

Engine dies when cold

Just bought a 2004 Colt 1.5L CVT. Today was the first time I drove it from cold and when I put my foot down to take off from stationary the engine died. Kind of felt like it ran out of gas as I tried to accelerate away. Or what it feels like in an old car when you pull the choke out when the engine is already warmed up. It started up again fine and did the same thing again. If I only put the foot down lightly it didn't die but it was like the engine was choked or something. As the engine warmed up the problem went away slowly and once it was up to temperature the problem has gone away completely.

All cars are sensitive to cold .it being a new car you can turn on the ignition for say 30sec to a min before cranking to allow the oxygen sensor heater to warm so it can read properly and will help in these conditions .also a new set of spark plugs can help too.

SOURCE: Cold Start Idle Issue

Problem might be the air control valve, it's located at the right side rear of intake manifold and has a hose going to the air intake duct from the air cleaner, as a test you might try pinching off that hose when the idle is a problem.

SOURCE: Intermittent High Idle, Dies on cold starts, bad mileage

These cars are notorious for intake manifold leaks. This could also be a throttle position sensor. If you have a MIL (check engine light) I would scan it with an OBD II scanner and pull the relevent code off the scanner it will give us a much more accurate direction to proceed

Why does my 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe stalls in cold weather randomly

Vehicle batteries tend to die during cold weather months since more amperage(power) is required to turn over the engine.

long post.
ill reduce it for you.
misfires. (is RPM below 700 then misfire can be normal) for idle speed controls dead.
ISC the isc controls speed, of idle,.
mine stuck like zillion times, in 400k miles. endless.sticking
mine was a tiny gutless stepper motor drive ISC valve.
the cone valve is side gets nasty and sticks (
(PCV gases caused as seen on all engines)
i clean it.
the proof is the easy press of right foot easy raises idle back to 700rpm and engine stops misfiring.
ever get a tuneup this decade or running spark parts 500,0000 miles
for the new world record.?

now the tricky part of ISC, , fully explained in the SM serv. man.
the PCM learns its behaviors.
it learns all hot start settings and cold
so when you key on, it goes to the correct HISTORICAL spot.
if it can move there(sticks) engine car race.
or run too slow,
cold start would be worse, as hot isc is more closed
so if sticks there closed, the next cold start will be horrid
some newer manuals telly you to add 5% throttle if car is hard starting this is so common.

clean it. end story.
ISC

Take it back to where you got it and make them refund your purchase price. If they refuse and you finianced it go to them, There a law called "The Lemon Law" that makes it unlawful to sell something like that. Sounds like you sure bought one. Don't do anything to it just get hold of the place where you bought it and tell them to come get their junk out of your yard! dhgill1949
