SOURCE: need to replace gear selector on golf automatic as it wont start cut out on me so was in gear have had it checked and it is the gear selector how do i fix it myself

Hi Gary, I may be wrong but I think the gear selector mechanism would not cause the vehicle to cut out? If a diagnostic scan has reported a fault with the selector mechanism it will be with alignment of the switching mechanism which allows start up only in park or neutral. If the starter turns the engine with the selector in either of those two positions (P or N) the problem is with the engine not the shifter. If the engine does not turn you may have two or more problems. Give more details and describe the events leading to the problem more clearly. Regards John

if its the the gear selector is moving and not going into gear ----under hood drivers side under brake mastercylinder is the top of transmission the gear selector cable connection is there check that it hasnt come off, loose or damaged ----=if selector does go into a gear and trans not responding look under drivers side and thru wheel wells for fluid leak ---theirs no dipstick so to check fluid
There is a black cap located on top of the trans almost directly under the brake master cylinder. It's about 2 inches high, 3 inches around. That's where you add the fluid. The checking procedure is as follows: Start the engine and allow the engine to idle until the transmission fluid temperature has reached the value specified. 104 degrees F.
Depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever through the gear ranges, pausing a few seconds in each range. Return the shift lever to the PARK range.
vehicle must be level with the engine running and the shift lever in the PARK range.
Remove the transmission oil level control plug.
The plug in an 11mm bolt located between the r/s axle seal and the oil pan.
Check the fluid level. The fluid level should be even with the bottom of the threaded plug hole.
If you remove the plug and nothing comes out, add about half a quart at a time until the fluid starts to dribble out. Once it stops, the level is good.this is the procedure to check fluid if their is fluid and problem still persists the transmission module and or internal transmission damage possible which a mechanic {transmission}would need to diagnostic check the following link has multi videos for the cobalt transmission 05 Cobalt Transmission Fill Yahoo Video Search Results

Hi i have a pajero 3500 V6 2000. Manaul gears only change to 1 and 2 gear wont go to the other gears. What can the problem be Thanks

1st and 2nd gear are on the same selector rail and if you cannot move the gear lever across the slot that means that the selector rail has not been correctly positioned and the interlocking pin between the rails is not allowing them to move . I suggest that you remove the gear lever turret from the top of the box and see where the selector levers are . With your problem then one rail should be out of alignment with the slot of the other gears .If you have had the box apart then the problem is in the fitment of the selector rails.

2003 kia sedona ignition will not turn

On the top right side of the gear selector there is a cap that covers the inside of the gear selector components, if you pop that off with a flat head screwdriver you can manually disengage the parking brake

There is a squeaking sound coming from the front right side when the car moves forward or backward the sound is stronger when moving slower. The sound is there even if the engen is off and push the car by...

This may be the brake pads warning scrapper. The break pads have a scraper on them to let you know it is getting time to replace them. As you drive and they wear more and more it will get loader and loader. Pull the wheel and check the pads, depends on the wheels you have, with some wheels you can see the pads without pulling the wheel off.

06 f150 4x4 the 4wheel drive will not go into 4 low but will go into 4high

You need to have your foot on the brake, put the Trans in Neutral, and then shift the Selector to 4 Wheel low. If this does not work you need to check the wire at the transmission for Voltage changes. Each position on the selector has a Resistor and they use 1 Servo to make the gear changes. You need to see if the Selector has different Voltages in each position. If it does, then the Servo is not responding.

But do not forget the Interlock of the brake pedal for the gears to change. Also check for light at the Selector switch. If the lightbulb is burned out you will sometimes throw off resistance and wind up missing functions.

You should either check the neutral switch on the column inside by the base or the steering wheel or replace it. Sounds like it maybe shorting out or a wire is pinching.

The gear shift moves but never goes into gear. What can I check before calling machanic.

if th9is is rear wheel drive you will have to get under the vehicle and look at the cable that hooks up the selector shift inside of the vehicle to the transmission.... Any ways, look on the side ofthe transmission (drivers side and you should see a lever connected to a cable... see if that cable is dis-conected and/or moves when the selector lever (gear shift inside) is moved. If it does move with the movement of the selector lever, then the issue is locatred inside of thr transmission, and should be looked at by a mechanic... other wise reconnecting the cablke is as easy as tightening a bolt, and adjusting the placement of the cable inteh correct position, in sync with the transmission... IF you need more clarification, let me know and I will post pictures for you to look at and compare with your transmission...

Front wheel drive transmission is visible from under the hood and would be easier to diagnose, but what you are looking for (actuation of levers with movement of gear shifter from inside of vehicle, and cable attatchments are all similar, just in differenbt spots).....

Like I said, if you need p[ictures, let me knw and I will post them . Just tell me if rear wheel or front wheel drive.

My 4 wheel drive will not disengage

You might want to check the gear selector switch that is located on the driver side of the tranny, if the 4x4 is electric and not manual for engagement, selector must read neutral to disengage 4 wheel drive. by experience if you drove it through deep water gear selector switch can get damaged.
Your hubs may be locked as well. Try reversing for 30 or more feet to try manually unlocking your hubs. Make sure 4WD is turned off when trying.
