The oxygen sensor is down behind the motor mid ways of motor. Can be got to from underneath. I have already replace one, so I know how hard it is to get too. If you decide to go from on top of motor, You will have to take off all the breather and hoses to get to it. From underneath you lay in center of vehicle and its on top of manifold. It comes out better when its hot.

SOURCE: location of oxygen sensors on 2002 dodge grand

The o2 sensors are located on the exhaust system. The upstream in on the rear exhaust manifold and the down stream is in front of the catalytic converter.Usually when they are bad they will make the check engine like go on.Make sure the air filter is clean, tires at correct inflation, alignment is to specs. If the vehicles pulls to one side or the other or steering wheel is not straight when driving down a straight stretch of road. Also tires are wearing normal.Use cruise control where ever on highway. If you let your vehicle warm up in winter. This also uses gas.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Check engine lite on with PO421 code

P0421 = Catalyst System Efficiency below Threshold(Bank1) The catalyst's efficiency is demonstrated by its ability to oxidize CO and hydrocarbon emissions. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) compares the output signals of the front and rear oxygen sensors to determine whether the output of the rear sensor is beginning to match the output of the front oxygen sensor. Air/fuel mixture compensation keeps the frequency of the front oxygen sensor high due to the changes from rich-to-lean combustion. The catalyst causes the rear oxygen sensor to have a lower frequency. As the catalyst wears, the rear oxygen sensor's signal trace begins to match the front oxygen sensor's signal trace. That is because the catalyst becomes saturated with oxygen and cannot use the oxygen to convert hydrocarbon and CO into H???O and CO??? with the same efficiency as when it was new. A completely worn catalyst shows a 100% match between the frequency of the front and rear sensors.

Catalyst system efficiency below threshold

is that the code you get from comp is PO420 eng light if so worst news either you have an exh leak between o2 sensor 1 and o2 sensor 2 or the front o2 sensor is lazy or the front catyletic converter is not working

basicaly code is only triggerd when engine is hot and the front o2 sensor and the rear o2 sensor read the same voltage when conv is working the front o2 sensor will fluctuate rapidly from 0v to 1v and rear o2 sensor will remain steady at 0.5v

try to explain best i can plz vote comment or reply if you need more help

I have a 98 s70 5 cyl no turbo. I am getting a rich bank 1 code. I hooked my scan tool up to the car and my front 02 is switching ok, but my rear 02 is staying at .85 to .95 at slow flat cruise. When I...

Hi,

The front O2 sensor is what the ECU uses to determine the correct air/fuel mixture to keep the engine running correctly, the rear sensor is purely to measure catalyst efficiency. Once the car has warmed up and the sensors are in what is called `closed loop` this means the engine is no longer in the warm up stage and the catalyst is hot enough to be working efficiency you should expect to see the front sensor constantly changing between rich and lean when idling or cruising at approx 2500 to 3500 rpm, the rear sensor should be more or less constantly reading lean. If you find that the rear sensor is mimicking the front sensor i.e. constantly switching rich to lean then it indicates your cat is not doing anything and you most probably have a defective cat.

Be sure before changing the cat to check for anything on your engine that could be causing a problem, air leaks on the inlet or exhaust system will cause the front sensor to read lean and the engine ecu to try and compensate by richening the mixture, this may artificially correct the reading from the front sensor but will cause the rear sensor to pick up a rich reading, similarly a slight misfire will cause unburnt fuel to enter the exhaust giving a rich mixture reading from the front sensor and will also burn the cat out very quickly.

Hope this helps and good luck, thanks for using fixya

Just replaced O2 sensor a few weeks ago and check engine light has returned for yet a second time. Code is now reading P4020 Catalyst efficency below threshold.

Sounds like the converter is bad. There is also a service bulletin from Toyota for this problem. They have released new computers to be installed that are less strict on how well the converter is working.

P0422 Main Catalyst Efficlency Below Threshold (Bank 1) The catalyst’s efficiency is demonstrated by its ability to oxidize CO and hydrocarbon emissions. The Engine Control Module (ECM) compares the output signals of the front and rear oxygen sensors to determine whether the output of the rear sensor is beginning to match the output of the front oxygen sensor. Air/fuel mixture compensation keeps the frequency of the front oxygen sensor high due to the changes from rich-to-lean comvustio. The catalyst causes the rear oxygen sensor to have a lower frequency. As the catalyst wears, the rear oxygen sensor’s signal trace begins to match the front oxygen sensor’s signal trace. That is because the catalyst becomes saturated with oxygen and cannot use the oxygen to convert hydrocarbon and CO into H₂O and CO₂ with the same efficiency as when it was new. A completely worn catalyst shows a 100% match between the frequency of the front and rear sensors. The ECM sets P0422 if the average of caculated oscillation size of rear HO2S value is higher than threshold value during predetermined time.

I'm getting error code 72 - right rear (or just) catalyst efficency failure. Can anyone help with this

There is an oxygen sensor (o2 sensor) in front of the catalytic converter, and another one behind it. The computer looks at these two readings and if they are close to the same, it determines that the converter is not working efficently. It could be bad o2 sensors, or a bad converter. You will have to scan the computer and see what the readings for these two o2 sensors are. If they are both close to zero, then replace the sensors. If they are both reading voltage from the sensors, the converter is bad.

I have a 2000 nissan maxima and, after going to an auto parts store, was told that the code for the "service engine soon" lite being on is p0430. the person told me that it could be a multitude of things,...

"DTC P0420, P0430 THREE WAY CATALYST FUNCTION"

This code can be logged if a bad quality fuel,

the nissan daignosis procedure goes...

1. check the exhaust system for leaks, damage etc. this will give the sensor a bad reading
2. check for intake air leak, would be a hissing sound between air flow meter and engine throttle, maybe a loose hose, the intake tube can come loose in the middle.
3. check ignition timing, this should not change, if it did there would be more codes than this. bad quality fuel can also cause incorrect timing
4. check spark plugs, are due to be replaced at every 100,000km.

after that there is a lot of wiring tests, one of these 4 things would be most likley. reccommend try fuel from a different station first.
hope this helps
