I just had this fixed on my suby today. The cause is that the spark plugs, go through the valve covers on the 2.5 l .When the o rings in the cover go, the result is oil in the spark plugs. The cost of the repair in Canada was about $500 including diagnostics as well as new plugs and wires About 1.5 hours labor and new seals and gaskets. It now runs like new. This is a common problem for this subaru engine as well as for the dodge neon.

Testimonial: "I've changed it before, but its been a while. I thought about that after I posted the question. Gonna try that next. Thanks"
The gas smell is probably unburned fuel left in the cylinders.
Sounds like the car is running rich or too much fuel,a fuel injetor service may be in order, or a carb service.
OIl around the plugs could be from a leakon the valve cover gaskets or a clogged vacum line.
Time for a fuel system service.

i would reccomend a complete tune up =oilchnge ,all fluid levels checked or changed as well as all belts hoses vacuum lines and have the battery horn checked out as well as the cap or i think you have a coil pack on that one ...$ but is it worth investing all that money into it or better to replae at this point ,,,if you keep it you might try reading my tips and tricks on tilt wheel and proper maintence that covers most all of what i have to say

SOURCE: I have a 2001 chevy
This sounds llike weak feul pressure, the fuelpump may need replacing, the first thing to do is have the fuel pressure tested and if the pressure is low then have the pump replaced. the pump is located inside the fuel tank and the tank will need to be dropped to replace the pump, good luck ,
