Normally pressing the button would remove the esp warning but it doesn't now.

Hi there
BAS is the Brake Assist System and if there is a malfunction it would
only come into play in an Emergency stop while applying full pressure.
BAS applies full braking force because people tend to lighten up their
pressure on the pedal in these situations. I would suggest that the best thing to do is go to a Workshop or Service Center and have it checked out. Please remember to put a good rating on my profile.
Kind regards

I had the brake light switch replaced by a local dealer. Cost was $140 and it fixed the problem. Have driven the car for two weeks since and no lights and all systems normal.

the esp light is caused by failure of the brake light switch in most models. check your brake light operation and replace the switch if the brake lights have failed. the switch is found in the footwell above the brake pedal
SOURCE: EPC LIGHT
The EPC light has to do definitions. One has to do with the tire pressure monitoring system. The other is the transmission line pressure control. I wish you could give me more information but to take a stab at this problem I will guess that your problem has to do with the brake-light switch (on the brake-pedal). Sounds like the switch is stuck on or defective and the TCC (torque converter clutch) Is getting a constant signal to disengage. Thus that's why you can shift without using the brake-pedal. Good luck.
Let me know how your making out.
Whenever
this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating
that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of
lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected
a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM,
SRS and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must
now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and
"scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the
problem(s)
