Start it cold with rad cap off, and heater on high heat, and let it run until you see increased flow in radiator, indicating thermostat opened & engine reached operating temperature. Rev engine slightly every once in a while and hold it there for 10-20 seconds, just to help purge air better/faster. Watch rad flow again, and wait until you see increased flow 3 or 4 times. Then top up coolant in rad to an inch or 2 from top of rad, and put cap back on. Top up return bottle to appropriate level on bottle & then try it again. If it still heats up, get back to me. Does it overheat at all times? Rad fan is good i take it?

Do the fan(s) come on when hot? Blow out the radiator core with compressed air (from the engine side) to clear it of bugs and other debris. Make sure the radiator is full to the top (when cold) and check the radiator cap seal rubber and the over-flow tank and tubing for leakage. It's possible that the water pump impeller is slipping on it's shaft and not pumping water properly. Remove the thermostat temporarily and remove the radiator cap. Remove some of the water so that the level is somewhat below the cap bottom, then start the engine and watch for rapidly moving water. That will show that the pump is moving water well. Allow the engine to heat up and keep track of the water movement. Shut the engine off at low end of 'normal' on the temp gauge and replace the cap so that it doesn't blow out boiling water into your face. Replace the thermostat and top up the water when cold again.

i have a 2005 1.8 nissan sentra.i rplaced the radiator becuause it was leaking.so when i did i took it for a test drive and the needle went to hot then back down to middle ways between the C & H BACK IN FORTH.so i replaced the thermostat. now as far as i can tell it is staying in the middle of C & H. i can't feel no water though cerulating through the top or bottom hose of the radiator. so now that i told you what i done so far my question is???? ( my heater is not working in the car it is blowing out cold air & i left the car runnng for about 45 min. even took it up and down the road.still cold air.what do you think i need to do?????????? )

The thermostat is not the only possibility for this problem.The thermostat is one of the possibility for overheating.If thermostat is replaced, but still the overheating problem is not solved, then get the coolant level checked.If the coolant is low, the engine will overheat.If coolant is leaking a bit, the engine will overheat.Get the radiator cap checked.If its loose or worn out,m the pressure will get released and it will overheat. ----------- Other possibility can be air in system.after replacing, the thermostat, the air has to be bleeded. park the car on flat ground - take the cap off the radiator and let the car idle for a while and add coolant as needed till you burp out all the air in the system. Make sure the coolant system is full first. The gauge may go up to hot until you get all the air out. Leave the radiator cap off, start engine, keep adding fluid till the engine warms up and pushes fluid out, then put the cap on and drive till the engine is warm, then cool off, add more fluid, repeat, till it stays full. You will get bubbles in the overflow tank until all the air is out.--------- as you mentioned head gasket replaced.But still get heater core and head-gaskets checked.------------

Start by checking the coolant. As we already said coolant is what warms the heater core. So if the coolant is low, there may not be a sufficient amount of warmth to transfer heat to the air in the passenger compartment.Once the coolant is full, feel the heater hoses that go through the firewall. With the engine at normal operating temperature, BOTH of the heater hoses should be hot to the touch. If only one is hot, this indicates there is is a blockage in the heater core or there is air trapped in the heater core.One hose hot, one cold, points to a plugged heater core.If this is the case,try flushing the heater core.There are no valves in the heater core; it is free flow at all times.Also check the head gasket. just because there is no water coming out of the exhaust dos,nt mean the head gasket is ok.How much pressure is in the system?.Are the water hoses very hard when the engine is hot?.......air in the system will stop the heater from working.------------Also try this procedure to clean the block in the heater core.If there is any:--- Put in a cleaner, Prestone, and drive car few hours.Then check if nNo success. Then get cleaner made by Gunk.You can get it from any local auto part store. Drain heater core, leave both heater hoses attached to the heater. Remove other ends of both hoses from the tubes on the thermostat housing and raise these ends above the heater core. Pour Gunk cleaner in one hose and add water until cleaner started to come out other hose. Leave this sit 4 hours and back flush heater core in both directions. Next back-flush block and radiator in both directions. Water should come out of tube on the thermostat housing that has a hose attached to the outlet of the heater core.If not coming then Flush water directly into this tube about 15 to 20 times and you will hear a thud of water coming out. Back flush block and radiator again and this time water should out the tube previously blocked. But if problem is same and no difference.Then is faulty heater core.Its causing the problem and it needs to be replaced.Also check the radiator,if its blocked then get the radiator back flushed too..------------ This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Hello and welcome to FixYa! If you have overheating problem, it can lead to multipleissues. You may be running on low coolant that's why the vehicle overheats. Ifthat's the case, please add coolant and make sure that it sits on the rightlevel, too much coolant can cause overheating too for coolant will overflow. The vehicle may have a faulty or worn out radiator blowermotor that's why it overheats. If that's the case then you will need a blowermotor replacement to resolve the issue. If the radiator is clogged with dirt and rusts this issueoccurs too. The coolant doesn't flow normally on the cooling system if it'sclogged. If that's the case, I strongly suggest that you have the radiatorflushed to drain out dirt and rusts. If you think that the radiator served youenough then it's better to have it replaced. Please do check the radiator hoses, If you have worn outhoses it can cause coolant leakage which can result to overheating. A tiny holeis good enough for the vehicle to overheat. A faulty thermostat sensor can cause the issue too. If youhave worn out thermostat, the fan may not trigger that's why the fan won't workwhen under stressed conditions. A blown radiator blower fuse can cause thisissue too so I suggest that you check the radiator blower fuse and replace itwhen necessary. What causes the radiator blower fan fuse to blow? It's becauseof a failing radiator blower motor, If that's the case have the radiator blowerfan motor replaced. If the fluid in radiator doesn't circulate then it meansthat you have a blown head gasket or a faulty water pump. I suggest that you gofor the water pump replacement first specially if you think that it's near theend of it's service life. Usually, water pops out the radiator when engine isreved (a sign of faulty water pump and possible blown head gasket). Hope you find this information helpful enough and thank youfor using FixYa! My experience; 2001 Aztec. Overheating in small high performance aluminum motors is very common. If the car is run(even for a short time) with the motor overheated, you will damage the engine. I changed the head gasket, had the head done, replaced the gaskets on the manifolds etc. , since the top of the motor has to be taken down to get at the head. If I had it do over I think I would have pulled the motor, of course this is no small matter either. GM didn't put much thought into working on this car. My recommendation, after making sure its not a simple problem IE: fans, radiator, etc. Pour some sealer into the cooling system and try to sell it to your worst enemy.

Car overheating and mixing water with oil


You have blown the head gasket. Also, you may have warped the head if it's aluminum which will happen due to ignoring the issue of overheating...which eventually caused the "blown head gasket". So, it sounds like you have 2 issues to resolve. 1) Why was it tending to overheat? Stuck thermostat, water pump issue or??? 2) Repairing the cylinder head or replacing it if warped badly, if your lucky it's just a blown head gasket. Allowing a overheating vehicle to be in service without solving that the overheating can lead to MANY other expensive problems.

Overheating but was told head gasket is gone. Now that the thermostat has been changed car cranks up & still overheats can drive for at least 3 blocks before temp gauge goes up. Would the car be able...


Hi...if your head gasket is blown it would have to be replaced to stop the over heating problem. And...YES... car will crank and move with blown head gasket.

waterpump? No movement of water/coolant, engine overheats. Engine overheats, warp heads. Next time you rip a head off, check gasket to see if head gasket failed or if there is a different cause to car overheating.

A new head gasket can't fixed warped heads. This engine must have seriously overheated at one time. Time for a new engine.

Over heat


If the head gasket goes water is allowed to seep into the cylinders and then out of the exhaust.

Once the level has dropped enough the car overheats

Or the water is pressurised in the radiator from the compression of the engine and it is forced out of the overflow leading to coolant loss and overheating

2000 olds alero overheating just minutes after start-up. I'm told its the intake gasket but it doesn't make sense. I would believe head gasket but not intake.


if there is no coolant in the vehicle it will overheat quickly also. it you added coolant its possible the thermostat is not opening causing an overheat. worst case scenerio the head gasket is the problem

Head gaskets don't cause overheating Usually they are a result of overheating. If the headgasket is bad one wil get leaking into the cylinders of coolant,which wil show up as milky oil.Like some one else stated ; have the radiator rodded out,(cleaned and fluashed).
