SOURCE: 2002 Avalanche gas gauge problems

Gm has a real problem with fuel tank sending units. That is what is wrong. You need a fuel tank sending unit. You can only get them aftermarket with the whole fuel pump module, but you can buy them seperate if you buy it from the dealer.

SOURCE: gas gauge quit working just shows low fuel light

This is a case of the sending unit being bad, this is very common on these trucks, this is like a toilet float, it floats inside the tank with a sensor at the base that controls the gauge, hope this helps,65a8465.jpg

I have a 2006 Pontiac Montana. My gas guage is extremely unreliable. I run out of gas when the guage shows a quarter tank. And the digital readout for fuel range will say I have anywhere from 65 to 130...

I would guess you will have to replace the sending unit in the tank. A mechanic can check the sending unit with a meter and find out if the sending unit is faulty or the gauge on the dash.

My 1990 plymouth voyager will not start at times, other times it starts just fine, I have replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter but that has not helped , we have taken it to the plymouth dealer in two...

to clarify, are you getting spark (even when it doesn't start?) My vehicle (1990 grand voyager 3.3L) does the same thing. Sometimes starts, sometimes not but may (or may not) in a few minutes or hours, etc.. Always has spark. So I have a "fails to start" of about 33% which means it is unreliable to drive and not be stranded somewhere. I've been chasing this problem for months, but my workaround is to carry ether/starting fluid. Squirting a little into the intake (open the air filter box) and it ALWAYS starts when cranked. Otherwise the van runs fine (strong performance, good milage, etc.) It's just starting without help that's unreliable.

I know the ballast resistor is bypassed when cranking to start (and in the circuit for regular operation). This could be my problem and I'll look into it. The ether is easier to ignite than gasoline fumes.

Gas gauge is unreliable. I have run out of gas when it said I had 68 miles to Empty. What can I do to fix that??

either fit as new sender unit or just keep the fuel tank full and never let it get to that state of running on empty.

check for fuel pressure and volume test, if good then I would not change the pump, but look as far as the ESC (electronic Spark Control) located below the coils. good luck!

I have the same exact problem. The numbers are fluctuating and unreliable. I refill the tank based upon my estimated.
