The engine has been chugging lately and the battery died on me on a wet day, bumped the car and it hasn't failed to start since but does sound terrible though i put that down to the exhaust needing replacing?

SOURCE: Toyota camry 2001emission not ready (Readiness == Fail )

The P0420 code, usually associated with a weak cat converter, is in fact often caused by an ageing (weak) downstream O2 sensor. On both my cars at around 150K miles replacing the downstream O2 sensor was all that was needed to clear the code. No cat replacement was necessary. If one actually spends some time reading the diagnostics procedure for this code, they will find that the O2 sensor diagnostic is the first thing to do before replacing the cat converter. The downstream sensor, the one after the cat converter, gets "lazy" with age. This means that it no longer produces voltage signals as it used to. The result is that the voltage swings that come out of it begins to follow very closely the voltage that is generated by the upstream O2 sensor. When this happens, the car computer thinks the cat converter does not do its job (which might as well be the case too, but the O2 sensor is the first thing to try). With a code scanner with live data stream you can see the voltages coming from the O2 sensors. Check-out my write-up on the 2002 Toyota Prius cat converter replacement on http://www.pbase.com/kocho/exhaust_prius

Turn key ,won't turn engine, lights stay bright, jump with spare battery car starts no prob

Check connection of battery terminals to it's related cables. Try using one of the jumper cables to connect negative of battery to chassis.if still fail, try connecting to engine block. If fail, try recharging/replacing battery. Lights may stay bright but battery may mot have enough amperage to turn starter motor.

Effect of deffective timing belt

If the timing belt breaks, the engine will not start because the valves will not open. If the belt is loose and still turning the cam, the engine may start but will not have the right compression.

Ford fiesta 02,petrol,1.4i zetec.its failed mot on the fast idle emission test, using alot of oil but runs ok.told pistons/new engine.can it be fixed or is it new engine? car serviced only 75,000 dont want...

Depending on how bad the fail was, there are a few things you can try.The first two are really nasty things to do and I take no responsibility for the success you might achieve or the damage you might do, but they could work for you.

I'm not sure if you are saying the car has JUST been serviced? If it hasn't, then an oil change might just be enough to thicken up the oil so it's not getting past the piston rings and getting burned, causing the emission fail. (You might want to even consider cheating further by changing the recommended 10w/40 for 20w/50 oil). Keep the engine as cool as possible (so oil is thick as possible). Drive with the heaters on the way to the MoT, Get there early and let the engine cool, anything you can do to keep the engine cool and the oil thick.

You can be a REAL cheat and reduce the amount of oil in the engine to the point where it JUST causes the oil warning light to stay off (You will be surprised to discover that the oil warning light will stay off even with the oil in the sump off the end of the dipstick!) With less oil splashing around, you will burn less and this may get it through.

You will almost certainly get away with just new piston rings, rather than new pistons or an engine, Doing the job yourself of course depends on your level of DIY mechanic ability. It's not a fantastically hard job and I THINK (No promises, that you can just drop the sump and extract the pistons without much major dismantling.)

hi mate it sounds like a lazy starter moter but failing in that a one off problem is try changing your oil yeah it sound silly but a have had one in the past and that was the problem as the oil sank to the sump over nite and caused it like a dry friction once it was started and oil was up it would fire all day

Ford failed MOT on High CO emission

High CO usualy means the O2 sensors are not reading properly. Take it to a parts store that can read codes, I know Auto Zone does in my area. If it is the O2 sensor it is an easy fix but the sensors run about $50.00 each.

Ford Mondeo failed its MOT exhaust emisson test

The advice that the garage gave you seems right. If any bushes were worn they would show up on the MOT Test. Try taking it to another garage to check out the Cat for your peace of mind.
