1988 Buick Century stalls

The car will randomly stop. Sometimes it starts some time it does not.

We have replaced the fuel pump, a coil, and some gas line. It will start sometimes and not others. It just conks out there is no sputtering. It just shuts off. I have a code of 42 but I need to know how to test a few things to narrow down part replacement instead of spending a fortune. The randomness of it makes it so frustrating.

Hi Deb, when it stops an won't start pull two spark plug wires off the same coil an crank it over an see if it has spark ! If it doesn't have spark you could have a bad crankshaft position sensor or ignition control module . If you have spark take the air cleaner box off or the flexible rubber hose from the air cleaner box to the engine off , just a couple of hose clamps . Spray some carburetor cleaner into the engine, because it's flammable ! IF you do this an it try's to start you could have a fuel pump problem or a bad fuel pump relay ! One more question , is your check engine light on ?

SOURCE: 1987 Buick Century - stalling out

I had a 1987 Century and when mine started acting like that I took it to a garage and they hooked it up to a computer tester for free. Is she getting the check engine light coming on? They found that mine was running (lean) which ended up being my fuel pump. Which is in the gas tank and can be pricey to get done, between $250-$350 and of course the filter would get done at the same time and that is only$20

My 1988 buick century stall,s after driving. engine warm,s up.won,t start right after stalling.start,s after sitting 10 or 15 minutes

Possibly an ignition module or crank sensor problem. These are the two most common stalling electronics that will cause a stall when they get warm/hot and will then continue to operate once cooled down

1988 Buick Century 3.8 stalling issue starts back up. fuel pump/filter replaced it stalls out randomly at all driving conditions. I am stumped on this one. anyone have help for me on this?

Does it seem to do it more once it runs for a bit? It could be a bad DIS module. They are known to fail once they get hot. Either that or the ignition switch located at the top of the base of the column.

I have a feeling your fuel pump is on its way out...but start by changing your fuel filter first, should be under $20....ie..not enough fuel getting through..

Try first to replace the fuel filter. Then if that don't work, have the sensors checked by an auto technician with a diagnostic tool that interfaces with the cars computer. Most places will do this for free.
