Remove the coolant (usualy at the expansion tank) cap and see if there is a floating switch and if so meter it to see if it is working as it should or else just replace it.

Temperature light on and off

Check coolant level. If low, refill and check for leak. If coolant level is good and coolant is flowing thru radiator, trace the temperature wire for a short against the engine. If the wire is good, replace the sensor.

2000 monte carlo. .. coolant light won't turn off ... put tune up and new manifold

Is it running at the right temperature and is there coolant in the system and has it been refilled recently?
Possible reasons are the sensor is faulty, it really is running hot or there is an air lock.
Also look at the connection to the coolant sensor, check its not corroded.

Engine light won't go off have topped up coolent

Was it the check engine light or the Low Coolant error message?

If the former, likely an emissions problem - coolant is unlikely to solve that.

Have the OBD codes read at an auto parts store, proceed accordingly.

The Low Coolant light sometimes takes some time to reset.

You did refill / recheck it with the engine COLD, didn't you?

That would be your engine coolant being very low. When the vehicle hits that you definitely should refill your engine coolant. The good thing is you can buy the coolant as a premix (usually 50/50) at most car stores.
Make sure you buy a few as you are very likely to be out. The longer you drive your vehicle while this is lit the more likely you are too damage it. So ensure to refill that right away. The coolant reservoir is the big yellow cannister on the passenger side above the windshield washer reservoir intake. It has a min and max level indicator on the side.
When refilling ensure that its at full then run your car for a little while for the fluid to be pumped into your radiator. If it was too much it may overflow a little don't be concerned about that but after running for a while with more coolant you will find your car running smoother and the light should turn off.

The coolant light has just come on, can it still be driven...and can i change this myself or take to garage?

DO NOT DRIVE the vehicle until you can confirm by VISUAL means the Coolant level in the System.
The coolant light coming on indicates, EITHER, Low Coolant level, or a Failure of the Coolant Level Sensor on the Surge [Expansion] Tank.
Also having refilled the Cooling system, and with the Engine running, LOOK for visible signs of a LEAK, on the Engine and Heater Hoses.

The low coolant light won't turn off even after I refilled it.

The float and switch inside the fill bottle is stuck. Use a screwdriver and gently tap it, see if you can move the float up and down manually. Work it up and down a few times to clear the blockage.

Car running hot

There is a level /float sensor inside the tank.

Wait until the engine is cold, empty the coolant tank and rinse.

Refill will 100% coolant to the COLD / COOL / LOW mark.
