Very bad issue, and could be dangerous. Most likely cause bad fuel injector stuck open. This can ruin engine bearing so drain oil and replace while also fixing leaking injector.

On a 2006 PT Cruiser, there is no direct means for gasoline to enter the crank case, so there should be no liquid gasoline there. Now, you will get a typical crankcase vapor smell (for lack of a better description), especially with higher mileage engines. These are hydrocarbons that have a distinctive smell.
Now; if you suspect gasoline in your crankcase, then take a quart sample of your oil and allow it to sit, sealed and undisturbed for several hours or all night. If there is gasoline, or water, then it will segregate accordingly.
Things to check:
When was the oil last changed?
When was the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) Valve last changed? If this is clogged, the result will be a strong hydrocarbon smell that will increase in intensity since it cannot vent properly. I would lean more in this direction.

What is year--make--model--engine size. Check proper fuel pressure, use a gage, key on engine off. Depending on the vehicle, see if pressure will hold for a bit with everything off. Some direct fuel injection vehicles have very high fuel pressure, maybe 2000 psi. I don't know what vehicle you have? Always follow proper procedure when checking fuel pressure. You said spark plugs so I guess it is a gasoline vehicle and not diesel.

Smell of the crankcase oil dipstick to see if it smells like gas? Can you check applicable trouble codes? Some of the national brand auto stores will check codes for free.

There are a number of possibilities here. Oil that is very old (high mileage) will become hydrocarbon contaminated over time. This can have a gasoline-like smell. There could be a problem with the piston rings allowing fuel the run down the cylinder walls into the crankcase. This can also occur in an engine that has a misfiring cylinder since the fuel is not being burned. Lastly, a leaky fuel injector can be flooding a cylinder, either when running, or after vehicle shutdown and before the fuel pressure bleeds off. This fuel will lay in the cylinder and eventually leaking into the crankcase, contaminating the oil.

My oil stick smells like gasoline when i check the oil

Not a good thing The carburetor is not shutting off the fuel flow completely when the engine is not running which allows fuel to run into the intake manifold. The fuel will find an open intake valve and run into a cylinder. It then seeps past the rings and flows into the crankcase.

I am not certain that an extra quart of oil would give you the problems that you are asking about, but overfilling your crankcase does increase the pressure inside the crankcase and may force oil where it shouldn't be going. In particular, your EGR system might start sucking up much more oil vapor or even liquid oil and mixing it back into the fuel stream going into your engine. I have had carbureted vehicles with tired engines (i.e., a lot of blow-by and oil vapor in the head) where the plugs have fouled because I have drawn too much oil vapor into the fuel system--in those systems, the EGR valve fed back into the air box, so the air being drawn in to mix with gasoline was laden with a lot of oil vapor. That fouled the spark plugs quite nicely, and I'd have to change or at least clean the plugs after a while to keep the engine running properly.

I am less persuaded that excess oil vapor can plug your fuel injectors. The injectors are designed to squirt a precise amount of gasoline into the air that's being drawn into the engine. The "oily air" would never be on the high pressure side of the fuel injectors. I suppose it's possible that oil could be deposited on the outside of the fuel injector in such quantities that the injector wouldn't spray in a proper pattern, reducing engine performance. However, the fix for that would be pretty simple: remove the fuel injector and carefully clean the outside of the injector with a serious gum-cutter like Berkebile 2+2 (which is much more potent than standard carb cleaner). That fix would be both faster and cheaper than disassembling the injectors to clean their internal parts.

My 2000 Saturn L with 2.2 engine . I changed oil and found about four quarts of gas in the oil .put new oil in ran the engine the next day I check oil.The oil level was really high on dip stick and smells...

You have a serious/dangerous breach between the fuel supply and lubrication system. Oil is a bit flammable itself without gasoline being added. Used to see this with mechanical fuel pumps getting a hole in the rubber diaphragm and dumping gas into the crankcase. However yours is an electric pump. This has to be something that an experienced GM mechanic has seen before. I think that 2.2 was used in many GM products so a Chevy dealer should be able to help you. This is one problem which I would take to a dealer first, just to get an estimate.

There is a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail, and thats where the fuel return line hooks to. On that fuel pressure regulator is a vacuum line. Pull that vacuum line off the regulator and see if it is wet inside with gasoline. If it is not, and its dry, hook it back up. If it DOES have gas in the vacuum line, then there is a hole in the regulator diaphragm and the regulator needs replacing - simple task and $25-$100 depending on which one they used on your model truck. If this IS the issue - It is critical you replace the engine oil and filter , then again after 10 to 20 miles to get the gasoline our of the crankcase. Very important to engine life.

If not the above, then check to see if your oxygen sensor is functioning properly. They should be replaced every 60k miles.

Why would i get gasoline in engine oil? engine is a 1968 VW aircooled in stock form. Have changed fuel pump and rebuilt carb. Car willo not start without starting fluid.

I think that the only way that can happen is that fuel is getting past the rings and into the crankcase. You have changed the fuel pump, then that leaves the carb dumping fuel into the intake and getting past the rings. The fuel is not staying in the carb and that is why you have to spray to start.

Not getting gas to carberater 1972 bug

Start with the simplest things first... remove the line from the input side of the pump... does fuel flow out nicely? If not, it's a clogged line and probably a lot of gunk in the tank... take off the filler cap and apply some low pressure air to the engine end of the line... if this unclogs it, you will hear a bubbling sound at the filler tube. if fuel flows freely, reconnect and take off the output line at the carb and, (after disconnecting the coil high tension lead and grounding it!) engage the starter, fuel should come out in a solid stream (not just a dribble)... if not replace the pump. If it does turn out to be the pump, check your oil for a gasoline smell as a faulty pump diaphragm can let oil into the crankcase. If so, change oil as well... Hope this helps...;-)
