Open Question

After accidentally activating the differential switch thus engaging the 4wd system, I cannot deactivate either system despite following the instructions in the manual. We had to drive it approximately 40 miles in this condition limiting our speed to 35 mph on dry pavement. After a while a strong sulfur smell appeared and did not go away. My 2 questions are thus: did we damage anything by driving and how can I possibly disengage both systems?

Yes it will, once no power is going to it it should or it could remain locked as well Give it a try . But you should have a look at the relay

try grounding pins 1 - 4 this should lick or unlock the diff..

SOURCE: antilock brake system engages on low speed stops on dry pavement on my 2004 Silverado

The most likely cause is rust buildup under wheel speed sensors causing them to dislodge(lift up) from front hubs and read incorrectly. If recall has been performed to fix this problem...You may have to replace the appropriate hub in order to stop the ABS activation at low speeds. Let me know if i can help more.

There is a vacuum switch on the transfer case left side,up high!(Most have 2-3 vacuum hoses) That switch is bad!

My 2011 Dodge Nitro keeps slipping out of 4 wheel drive while driving uphill


1. There is no limited slip differential on the Nitro. It was never offered as an option. Traction control acts by applying the brake to the spinning wheel, thus sending torque to the opposite wheel.
2. 4 Wheel Lock locks the 2 drive shafts together - 50/50 torque split.
3. There is NO center differential in the transfer case. Thus, our system is considered a Part Time 4WD system.
4. This being said, you can only engage 4WD on a slippery surface, or you may end up breaking something.
5. The Traction Control works on both the front and back, so it acts like an ELSD on both ends.

Most likely cause is the encoder motor on the transfer case. This is the motor that activates the transfer case. Usually sets a code so you may want to have it scanned.

99 ford f150 4wd won't engage, clicks but does not engage


Without knowing how the 4X4 works you don't have much chance of finding the problem , (tapping on stuff ) ? There is an electronic control module that makes this system work . Could have DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's stored in the (GEM)
Transfer Case -Electronic Shift on the Fly (ESOF) Operation The electronic shift on the fly (ESOF) system is an electronic shift 4x4 system that allows the operator to choose between two different 4x4 modes as well as 2-wheel drive. The operator can switch between 2WD and 4H mode at speeds up to 88 km/h (55 mph). To engage or disengage 4L range, the vehicle speed must be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake pedal depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL.
The transfer case is equipped with an electromagnetic clutch which is located inside the case. This clutch is used to spin up the front driveline when shifting from 2WD to 4H mode at speed. When the control switch on the instrument panel is turned, the generic electronic module (GEM) recognizes that a shift has been requested and activates the electromagnetic clutch and the relays which power the transfer case shift motor. When the shift motor reaches the desired position, as determined by the contact plate position inputs to the GEM, power to the shift relays and motors will be removed. When the transfer case front and rear output shafts are synchronized, the spring loaded lockup collar mechanically engages the mainshaft hub to the drive sprocket. Finally, the front axle collar is engaged and the electromagnetic clutch is deactivated.
Shifts between 2WD and 4H can be made at any speed up to 88 km/h (55 mph). Listed below are the inputs and outputs needed by the GEM to execute a change between any of these modes.
Feature Inputs:
  • 4WD mode switch (various resistances; go to Table 1).
  • Contact plate position inputs A, B, C, D (grounded when closed, open circuit when open; go to Table 4).

Depending on the make and model, it could be the control switch on the dash or the switch that moves the gears in the transfer case.

I have a 1998 explorer and the 4wheel drive will switch on like it should and the lights do not blink or anything but I can tell the rear end doea lock in low but never any power to front axle in any...

When pushing '4wd' button to engage 4wd, light just blinks. 4-wd does not engage. 2005 Toyota Sequioa SR5


People with 4wd vehicles do not follow the advice of the owners manual,every 3 months they have to activate the 4wd system or the actuators are going to get stuck when you really need them. solution, you will need an assistant if the car is in the air even better, if you trust you mechanic ask him to do this for you. with a rubber hammer hit(tap) the actuator the one in the front differential and the one in the transfer case 75% of the time this trick work, if you need pictures tomorrow when I am at work I email you a couple.

4wd does not work


Electronic Shift On the Fly (ESOF) Operation
The ESOF system is an electronic shift 4x4 system that allows the operator to choose between two different 4x4 modes as well as 2-wheel drive. The operator can switch between 2WD and 4WD HIGH mode at speed. To engage or disengage LOW Range, the vehicle speed must be less than 5 kph, the brake depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL.

The transfer case is equipped with an electromagnetic clutch which is located inside the case. This clutch is used to spin up the front drive-line when shifting from 2WD to 4x4 High mode at speed. When the control switch on the instrument panel is turned, the generic electronic module (GEM) recognizes that a shift has been requested and activates the electromagnetic clutch and the relays which power the transfer case shift motor. 4WD Mode Switch
A rotary switch allows the vehicle operator to choose between 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW modes of 4x4 operation.

GEM Module
The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) controls the operation of the 4x4 system

Vehicle Speed Sensor
The vehicle speed sensor (VSS), mounted in the rear of the transfer case, informs the GEM of the vehicle speed.

Transfer Case Shift Motor Sense Plates

The shift motor sense plate, an integral part of the electric shift motor, informs the GEM to the positions of the transfer case

Transmission Range Sensor
Located on the left side of the transmission, this sensor informs the GEM when the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position.

Electric Shift Motor
The electric shift motor, mounted externally at the rear of the transfer case, drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and range fork within the transfer case to select between the 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW positions.

4x4/4x2 Vacuum Solenoids
These two solenoids are attached to the upper RH side of the engine compartment dash, and alternately route vacuum to the vacuum motor which engages/disengages the center axle disconnect collar in the front axle assembly.

4x4 Shift Motor Relay
A module containing two relays which under the control of the GEM, shift the transfer case shift motor between the 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW modes.

Transfer Case Clutch Relay
An electromechanical relay is used to activate the transfer case clutch within the transfer case.

Good luck and hope this helps,but start with the simple and check the fuses and wire harness. Both white/light blue stripe wires should have 12V in run. The GEM will ground the left side (closest to engine) solenoid to disengage the front axle. It will ground the the right side solenoid (closest to fender) to engage the front axle. If the GEM doesn't see Neutral it will not let the truck come out of 4Lo. If the GEM had water leaking on it it may well be the root of the problem. The shift motor only has power when the GEM sends it a signal to move the shift lever. Once the shift is completed the motor shuts off. There are 2 wires that control the shift motor. A yellow and an orange. The GEM alternates between 12v and Ground to these wires to control which way the motor turns. The GEM uses the transfer case shift relay module to control the power to the motor. There are contact plates inside the shift motor assembly that indicate the position that the shift lever is in. This is what the GEM used to know what the T-case is doing. Any one of these components can fail.

1998 ford expedition 4x4 not working transfercase works


Today I fixed the vacuum lines to the front differential (nee transaxle). I had trouble finding parts in the local auto store that would do the trick - but I got something cobbled together. Based on my experience, I can go back to the store and get the right parts for a proper fit.

As of now, 4WD will engage but will not disengage - clearly one of the connections is still poor, or I accidentally switched the ports, or the vacuum shift motor (attached to the front differential) is shot (obviously from abuse).

As near as I can tell, once I switch into 4WD-HI, it will not shut off. 4WD-LO will engage and disengage properly. If I turn the car off for a while, a couple of times 4WD has disengaged. Hmmm...
