Question about 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid
Clattering Noise only when engine is on, and the noise goes away in electric mode. I was on the highway when the noise started. Immediately got the red triangle with exclamation point, and also got the message to stop safely now. I pulled over and shut the engine off, restarted after 5 minutes, triangle and exclamation point were off but the noise did not go away. Same car was rear ended 1-1/2 weeks ago. I had oil before heading out on the trip, but was 3 quarts low after 80 miles. I pulled the valve cover but nothing looked broken or loose. Water pump is working. Vehicle is low on power and doesn't shift well. Any ideas on what might be making the noise?
So being it doesn't clatter in electric mode, a safe assumption is the noise is with the gas motor.
Usually a clattering noise is valvetrain noise, like a lifter not pumping up.
Low oil will cause this.
3 quarts low would probably definitely cause this!
You need to find out why you lost 3 quarts in only 80 miles!

This is certainly one of the strangest things I have ever heard as a mechanic. . This almost sounds like some one is playing a game of letting your oil out this vehicle. With no visible leaks no burning smell of oil. However I would recommend that you check the coolant in the radiator and see if the oil is in the coolant. (If they are mixing together) If they are mixing the coolant should have a milky look to it, creamish white. If its good then the only other logical explanation is that the vehicle i s burning alot of oil, but if that was true you would see a grayish blue smoke from tail pipe. If you are 100% sure they are no oil leaks on this vehicle, then this problem is surely strange. Check coolant and get back to me. Good Luck
