Replacing water outlet housing unit on a 2000 alero 2.4l

They told me it was the thermostat housing unit at the shop. However, I disassembled the outlet pipe and the thermostat was there. They told me "It is like four bolts." well I am well beyond that and am learning that the part isn't even near the thermostat, or even called the thermostat housing unit. Do I have to take the power steering pump out to remove the "water outlet housing unit", if that is what it is even called?

SOURCE: Cant remove power steering pump.

Check for any hidden mounting bolts. There may be a rear mounting bolt. Make sure you have removed all mounting bolts. Recommend buying a Chilton's manual from Autozone.

There is a leak at the water outlet housing wherethe overflow tubing connects to it. There is no gasket or o ring to solve this.. how do you fix it?

check the radiator hose going to thermostat housing.it could be leaking.if hose okay.thermostat seal more likely leaking, meaning you have to replace the thermostat with seal.if thermostat with new seal still leaking.thermostat housing has a small crack in it.need replacing.

Is a thermostat housing and a water outlet the same part? Every time I search for a thermostat housing all I find are water outlets.

Yes and no, at most auto parts stores they usually use the term "water outlet" to refer to the upper portion, the lid if you will, of the thermostat housing. This is the part that the upper radiator hose connects to. It looks like this:
pinkypin123_0.jpg
Most times shops and parts stores use these terms interchangeably though. The thermostat in your car sits in whats called a water box, which the coolant temperature sensor connects into and is capped in by the housing/water outlet. I would just ask, if you are being told by a shop, if you just need the piece that connects to the radiator hose and bolts over the thermostat or if you need the the outlet and the water box.

Where is the thermostat on a 2000 alero 2.4 liter

The thermostat is virtually always right at the engine end of the upper radiator hose. There is virtually always a housing that the hose clamps onto, which housing is then bolted onto the engine. The thermostat is under that housing.
