Question about Honda Cars & Trucks
1998 Honda CRV with 172,000 miles. Engine in perfect condition except this winter it generated a misfire code in cylinder 4. Compression tested (all fine) on all cylinders, spark plugs and wiring replaced, timing belt replaced, coil replaced. Only does it on first start in extremely cold temps. Once engine is warmed up engine light goes out. Only thing left is maybe the battery is getting low?

A restricted injector can cause a more severe misfire at cold temps . Can you get someone to do an injector balance test on it ?

SOURCE: 2004 Neon SXT cylinder misfire
TRY REPLACING THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR..HAVE SEEN THESE CAUSE MISFIRES AND LOW VOLTAGE DTCS AS PCM THINKS VEHICLE IS NOT RUNNING..ALTERNATOR MAY NOT BE PUTTING OUT PROPERLY

I have changed a few cylinder heads under warranty for this type of problem. The exhaust valve guides wear, this causes the exhaust valve to seat badly, giving low compression. if one cylinder compresion reading is more than about 50 psi below the others, then this warrants head removal. It is quite a job, due to the fact that the camshft id chain driven. If you are up for it then once the head is removed, poor liquid into the exhaust ports and see if it leaks out through any of the exhaust valves.
