The valve body inside of the transmissions on these get warped and makes the valves stick and then bang into gear. Remanufactured valve bodies usually run $450+ plus install.

Check fluid level and condition, replace or top off as needed. If fluid is full and in good condition then its either shift solenoid or the gear itself. If fluid is a-ok take it to a transmission repair shop.

Did you change the transmission? You state you are trying to change it. I woulkd think all you need is a new valve body. If the valve body is bad it will not shift the rans automaticly all the time. It has pistons in it and they are sticking. When they do that the trans will shift manually only

The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consist of the following components:
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid.
• The automatic transmission park lock solenoid (Regal only).
• The automatic transmission shift lock control switch.
• The transmission range switch.

Regal
With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control and park lock solenoids. The transmission range switch provides a path to ground in the PARK position. With the automatic transmission shift lock control and park lock solenoids energized the shift lever is locked in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open. This causes the automatic transmission shift lock control and park lock solenoids to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.
Do the brake lights work ? If not could be cause by bad brake light switch .

The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid


?€¢
The body control module (BCM)


?€¢
The powertrain control module (PCM)

With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid receives a ground from the BCM. When the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is energized, the shift lever mechanically locked in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the PCM sends a class 2 serial data message to the BCM. The BCM turns OFF the ground control circuit and this de-energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. When the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is de-energized, the shift lever may be moved out of the PARK position. The BCM determines transaxle shift lever position through a class 2 serial data message from the PCM. The PCM receives inputs from the park/neutral position switch and determines shift lever position. When the BCM receives this information and determines that the shift lever is out of the PARK position, the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid ground is opened.

When the transmission is in the PARK position the contacts in the park/neutral position switch are closed. This allows current to flow through the switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, causing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.
Park Lock Solenoid
The park lock solenoid is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the key is in the OFF position. The key must be in the RUN position to release the park lock solenoid. The system consists of the park lock solenoid. With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to the park lock solenoid. The park lock solenoid energizes through a permanent ground unlocking the shift lever. With the ignition in the OFF or ACCY position the park lock solenoid de-energizes and locks the shift lever in the park position.
Shift Lever Does Not Move with Brake Pedal Depressed
DEFINITION: Transmission shift lever will not move out of the PARK position with the ignition ON and the brake pedal pressed.

The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the brake to shift relay coil. When the RIM energizes the brake to shift relay, the brake to shift relay switch contacts close suppling battery voltage to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally --closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The permanently grounded solenoid is energized. This locks the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open. This causes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.

On a 97 subaru impreza outback sport my transmission (automatic) shifts funny and sometimes slips completely but other times it shifts fine with no problems what gives?


SUBARU Automatic Transmission Solenoid A Dropping Resistor July 2, 2011. Author: Lewis Werner The SUBARU automatic transmission dropping resistor is connected in parallel with duty solenoid A. Duty solenoid A regulates the Subaru automatic transmission fluid line pressure. Like most of the transmission solenoids, duty solenoid A's duty cycle is varied by the transmission control unit (TCU) to control the line pressure.
The dropping resistor works with duty solenoid A in regulating the automatic transmission fluid line pressure. This resistor keeps a certain amount of current flow through duty solenoid A during the 'OFF' portion of its duty cycle. So in other words, duty solenoid A is never fully 'OFF'.
The dropping resistor is located on the right front shock tower, near the MPI (multi-port injection) fuel system dropping resistor. The photos at the right depict the Subaru automatic transmission dropping resistor.
If this resistor fails open, becomes disconnected, or has its wiring severed, one result might be increased shift shock. The reasoning behind this is that without the resistor in the circuit, the line pressure may be higher, since without the current passing through solenoid A during the 'OFF' portion of its duty cycle, it will tend to close further, and thus not bleed off as much pressure from the automatic transmission fluid pump.
If the resistor fails open or is disconnected, it should cause the ATF temperature lamp to flash 16 times on the next startup, since the TCU would be able to see electrically that the resistor is open.

The light flashes whenever the electronic transmission control unit senses a fault in the system controls of the transmission. You need the computer tested by the dealer or a shop with a special tester.
